Hamels and Park, lineups
Your Inquirer baseball team has today covered from both sides of Florida. Back in Clearwater, Jim Salisbury reports that Cole Hamels long-tossed this morning. Jim also spoke with Chan Ho Park, who confirmed that he is experiencing soreness in his left hamstring after slipping while throwing a pitch to Albert Pujols Sunday. Park was able to throw a bullpen session today, and believes he'lll start Saturday--though he'll know more about that tomorrow.

Here in Jupiter, a gray day with thunderstorms in the forecast. Here's the lineup for the 1:05 game against the Marlins:
Ozuna 2B
Donald SS
Ibanez LF
Howard 1B
Werth CF
Jenkins RF
Giles 3B
Coste C
Blanton P
UPDATE-- Hamels had this to say after long-tossing: "I felt good, but I had no problem long-tossing (before). A bullpen session will be the test."
In other words, because Hamels' elbow only bothered him between innings of games that he pitched, long-tossing at 150 feet did not provide a true test of his health. But it ain't a bad thing that he felt good. No word yet on when Hamels will throw his first bullpen session.
Did anyone see the game the US played against Puerto Rico the other day? Why was Jeter playing SS instead of Rollins? Jroll is much better than Jeter. Jeter missed a couple of plays that almost cost US the game. Deron Johnson should be playing the best players on the field not worring about Jeter's ego. James TL- I saw it James and I agree. We don't see Jeter that much, at least I don't, but it looks to me he lost a step. EL Zorro
Davey Johnson... frankenslade
Glad to see Coste behind the plate. Hope he can get his hitting grove back. KarenA
Davey Johnson...is hoping he doesn't get fired as Team USA manager? Timmy
WBC has mostly been great, but last night's game against Venezuela bordered on silly. Rain, nothing at stake except some chump change and seeding in finals. US roster depleted by injuries. Jeter has lost 2 steps...J Roll has clearly been the better SS. He ranged so far right on a ball last night, and tried to make an Ozzie Smith like bounce throw it was ridiculous. He and Victorino have also been big spark plugs offensively. Boys will be back in camp Tuesday or Wednesday...nice to see the full Phillies together on the same field next Thursday is my guess. bigredmachinefan
Jeter was rated the worst fielding short stop in the whole league, and you know who #1 was? J-Roll. Beef69
Coste has only had 10 at bats this spring. Give him a bit of time. Not great news on Park's ham, though this happens. Happ had a pretty good outing last time, if you figure 3 hits in 4 innings (or was it 4 hits in 3 innings?) just a shame two of the hits were HRs. the race for the #5 job is nowhere near over yet jeff gross
Slow news day. No news this time of year is good news. Allthough it is interesting that the older players are having trouble getting it going. Coste/Park. I feel the Phils mgmt have done an excellent job of bringing in re-enforcements and have everything under control. Out of curiosity how's Burrell doing this spring? Truth
Funny how quickly we abandon colonoscopy tales in favor of hammies and park conditions. Alls well that ENDS well. mick314
mick: the other issue was too full of sh*t for most of us jeff gross

Also won't it be nice to have J-Roll and Victorino back with the team next week. It'll give J-Roll a chance to get some real playing time! KarenA
I agree Karen its really ashame how the games best defensive shortstop has been treated. I think the Met/Philly thing is effecting Davey Johnson's cognition.... Truth
Jimmy has played quite a bit, but I think Jeter complains about lack of playing time. I just want the WBC to end before Jimmy or Shane gets hurt. Gary Varsho- Jeter is the captain of the US Team. I guess that's why he is getting a lot of starting time. I the other hand, Venezuela Manager Luis Sojo is throwing the new Mutts closer KRod out there almost everyday. Yesterday, they didn’t need him really and he still used him after giving him the day off. He looks great so far, throwing in the low to mid 90’s, but I wonder if he is going to have anything in the tank come the Dog Days of August. I also wonder what the Mets are thinking about the ex Yankee player and now manager in their minor league system. It's bad blood between the two NY teams? What do you think Andy?, you are from NY. EL Zorro
- It was very cool the way J-Roll and Vic played key roles in the comeback win against P.R. They're literally showing the world the kind of play that won a World Series. But I agree about keeping fingers crossed for no injuries.
Hey everybody, should we really trust a new yorker like martino to preach to and inform the loyal phillies nation? RobertD
It seems that Ozuna is getting a lot of playing time. I am glad to see Donald and Giles playing. More of Mayberry and not Jenkins or Stairs please. KGKoons- This is from the NY Post before Venezuela's game last night: "Club officials were especially hot yesterday after Mexico manager Vinny Castilla had Met starter Oliver Perez throw 85 pitches in an 8-2 loss to South Korea on Sunday. Perez wouldn't be anywhere near that number in an appearance right now if he were back with the Mets. Then there is the case of Frankie Rodriguez, otherwise known as the potential (and pricey) savior of the Met bullpen. K-Rod hasn't thrown more than an inning in the regular season since Aug. 17, 2007, as an Angel, but Venezuela manager Luis Sojo has now used him twice for four-out saves - Saturday against the Netherlands, and last night against Puerto Rico. Four outs might not be that big of a deal, but it can be when you're talking about a closer's health. And you could argue Rodriguez is the most important player on the Met roster in 2009 considering the bullpen's 29 blown saves last year cost them a playoff spot.'' EL Zorro
we can't afford an injury to either jroll or shane... RobertD
meat69-- do you have a source for that stat or are you just pulling it out of your colonoscopy? fla
I know that part of the reason for playing Jeter is that the US team promised the MLB clubs that their guys would all get sufficient work. I would assume that's at least in part true for the other teams with MLB players on them. I believe the WBC is important for world-wide exposure of baseball and I support it, but it certainly is a complex situation to balance a team's success in the WBC against fairness to the teams paying gobs of money for these players' services. Personally, I wouldn't at all mind seeing a mid-season WBC in place of the All-Star break every few years, and maybe even trimming a few games of the season in those years, though I guess MLB and the owners would raise holy hell about a suggestion they give up even that small a portion of their revenue. marty
Paulino and Marson have not shown enough offensively to allow the Phils to do without Coste who catches 1/3rd of the regular season games. Ruiz is a great defensive catcher and if you want anything from the position its defense, but offensively he is not the hitter Coste is. Coste does have a little more trouble with the wild pitch and his size vs. Ruiz makes it hard for him to retrieve them as quickly as Ruiz. Once Marson gets his feet under him and is not overwhelmed by the bigs you will see him replace all others. Happ is going back to the Pen and where he will get seasoning as middle inning long relief and the occasional left hand setup man role. The Phils must have a Righty that they can depend on beside Blanton if Myers implodes this year. Having Park in the Starting Rotation gives him a chance to settle in and if by chance we do lose someone from the starters than Happ is there to fill that role. Wally 24
I saw that USA vs. Puerto Rico game. I didn't know who to root for. J.C. was pitching against Shane and Jimmy, so I rooted for USA, of course. However,I cheered David Wright's game-winning hit that resulted in J.C. getting the loss. I think I'm going to need some therapy..... Erich H
