Halladay's impressive debut

POSTED: Thursday, March 4, 2010, 1:47 PM

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- As far as debuts go, this one was fairly anticlimatic, just the way Roy Halladay probably prefers.

Halladay faced seven batters in two innings. The only one to reach base was courtesy of an error.

Halladay threw just 24 pitches (21 strikes) over the two innings with three strikeouts. He was supposed to pitch between 40 and 45 pitches, but apparently Charlie Manuel and Rich Dubee saw enough.

In the first inning, Halladay faced four batters and needed 15 pitches (12 strikes). The only runner to reach base was Jamie Hoffmann on an error by third baseman Placido Polanco. Halladay struck out Jorge Posada and retired Robinson Cano on a hard liner to right field.

Halladay struck out Nick Swisher and Randy Winn looking to begin the second inning. Juan Miranda put the only ball in play, a weak grounder to second base.

He never reached a two-ball count to any hitter.

After he departed for Kyle Kendrick, Halladay walked out to the Phillies' bullpen in left field and reached his quota of pitches in the bullpen.

We'll have more in a little after Halladay talks in the clubhouse.

It is only spring but don't forget, Halladay is 18-6 lifetime against the Yanks. And that was with a Toronto team that is far inferior to this Phils squad. Strap yourself in for a hell of a ride back to the World Series where if the Yanks, who I think didn't really improve in the offseason, are lucky, we can have a rematch. Go Phils!!!

PP will do fine. Yes he's a tad old but let's give him time to work these errors out of his system during spring training as that is what spring training is for. For all of you who think PP is a bad addition, make sure you keep track of the runs he let's occur and the runs he is successful for. If the latter exceeds the other then he is, at best, neutral as far as his impact on the team. Feliz wasn't someone who everyone was thrilled to see at bat.
    Doubtful

Tthat's what spring training is for folks! Did you expect Palanco to be perfect from day one? On that play he made a nice dig while running toward first but he flipped it non-chalantly a bit too high for whoever was playing 1st at the time (speaking of which chances are that Howard with his hieight would have made the catch) no big deal in my opinion. Good job Doc! GO Phils!

This is just the pre-dinner mixed nuts....Main course to follow in a few weeks. This might be the best Fightin's team I have ever seen at this point. I intend to see every damn game that's televised. Thank goodness for DVR!! If Lady Fortune smiles upon us, and we get past the choke-point of the first (best of five) playoff series, we WILL be the World Series Champions. I don't think ANYBODY can beat us in a best of seven scenerio. GO FIGHTIN'S!!!

The error was committed by McNabb in a Polanco suit.

polanco is a good fielder he will not make many errors at 3rd base during the season and is the same age as feliz only quicker. if you really want to scrutinize a player try b. lidge.

The error at 3rd is Bush's fault.

Polanco's error was not a big deal. He had to go to his left and he made a nice play on a short hop, but his throw to first was a little high because he had to throw across his body and had to hurry the throw to try to get the guy at first. As far as errors go, it wasn't that bad, especially for someone who hadn't played the position in a while. He will be just fine. I was stoked at the variety of Halladay's pitches. Nasty stuff.
