What do Tom Coughlin and Roy Halladay have in common?

On the surface, very little. But the New York Giants coach reportedly used the Phillies' ace pitcher as a motivational example for his football team as it begins training camp.

Newsday's Bob Glauber wrote about Coughlin's tactics in Friday's edition. The Giants were 8-8 a year after winning the Super Bowl and Coughlin found similarities in Halladay's story.

"Here's a guy who had to go to 'A' ball to resurrect his career, and he did it with humility and he did it with the end in mind," Coughlin told Newsday.

Of course, Halladay, as the story goes, was shipped back to single-A after a disastrous 2000 season in which he posted a 10.64 ERA in 19 games (13 starts). He returned to the majors and has won 148 games with a 3.05 ERA since.

"His is a great example about work ethic, fear of failure, the way he was between starts, and the reason that he's so successful now because he was at an absolute low point," Coughlin said. "I thought it was a good way of showing our players that with effort and resolve, success can be achieved."

No word on which Phillies player Andy Reid will use as motivation.
