Halladay and agent in Philadelphia UPDATED
Andy Martino
UPDATE, 3:04-- The plot thickens: Foxsports.com has added that the Phils are in talks regading a potential three-team deal that would send lefthander Cliff Lee to an unnamed club. This makes sense for a number of reasons:
--Lee is owed $9 million next year, and the Phils need to clear payroll to sign Halladay.
--Lee will be a free agent after this season, and if he tests the open market the Phils would find it difficult to re-sign him, given their already robust payroll.
--Acquiring Lee may net the Phils some of the prospects requried to complete a deal, without having to give up players like pitcher J.A. Happ and Kyle Drabek, outfielders Domonic Brown, Michael Taylor and Anthony Gose.
UPDATE, 5:03pm
Cliff Lee's agent, Darek Brauneker, says he has not heard anything from the Phillies, Blue Jays, Mariners or anyone else today.
Multiple reports--SI.com, I believe, was the first to confirm it--have Halladay and Lee involved in a three-way that would send Lee to Seattle. A bunch of other names are surfaced, but reports are conflicting--some have Domonic Brown going to Toronto, while others have it as Michael Taylor. Pitcher Phillippe Aumont would reportedly be going to Toronto from Seattle. It should be noted that none of this is confirmed. We know that both the Jays and Phils liked Brown more than Taylor in July.
Brauneker has spoken with Lee today. "He is obviously aware of the situation,' Braunker said. "There must be something to it."
Brauneker, understandably, treaded carefully when asked if Lee was disappointed. "He certainly enjoys being in Philadelphia. There was not much for him not to enjoy."
The Phils and Lee engaged in preliminary talks about a contract extension last week. "We had a positive dialogue," the agent said. "All of the dialogue has been very positive on both sides."
They're most likely gonna have to trade Lee to get this deal done which in the big picture means we're still not better than the Yankees. If we kept Lee I would be planning the parade already. Come on management step up the payroll just for this year!!!! EaglesFlyersPhilsSixers
Cannot trade Lee though. Need to have both to be the best or dont do it. Halladay, Lee and Hammels is what takes you in front of the line, not 2 out of 3. DaveMac
I have a feeling if we get halladay, lee is involved with the trade out for a few reasons: 1) the overall product is a slightly better Cy Young winner for a long-term deal rather than just next year. 2) with brown and drabek as untouchables we really don't have enough ammo for the a trade straight up 3) like every other sport, its a business -- salary cap room just does not magically appear. Trading Blanton will not give us the room to support 15 million a year consistently. My guess Lee goes to another team for prospects and we get use those with one near top prospect (Taylor?) for Halladay. But hey, if I'm wrong thats awesome! But do the math, just "having" Halladay and Lee does not add up to what we can afford. But if the trade gets done in the way I just listed its still a HUGE win for the phils. DBpefs100
if they get rid of lee, amaro would be making one of the dumbest moves of his early front office career. bruiser81
Getting rid of Lee for Halladay is POINTLESS ! Get rid of an Ace for another. WHY ? The whole point in getting Halladay would be to have Halladay, AND Lee !!!! We would be unstoppable ! Will.i.Am
F the Eagles....this is how you win championships!!! Go Phillies! ArtieLange
Relax, I'm sure he's just here to try out for Wing Bowl loctastic
Comment removed.- Check out mlb.com for more details, but the current chatter is a Lee for Halladay trade. Phils would keep most, if not all, current farm prospects and Happ. It is said that there is a third team in the deal. At first glance, and if this is true, it would seem like the Phil's will need to send something to that third team. I also imagine that Lee would need to sign an extension with Toronto. PA_Logic
- Why is there a new yorker following the Phils as a beat reporter? "previously wrote for the New York Daily News, where he covered baseball" is code for longtime Mets or Yankee fan. No offense to this dude, but couldnt we get someone from Temple or some other local school for the gig?
- You have to keep Lee and Halladay that is the only way this would be really exciting. It would be exchanging one great pitcher for another. Six to one - Half a dozen to another... birds748
Why would we lose Lee for Halladay? Makes no sense. CrazyIvan
How does trading our best pitcher who was great for another great pitcher make us better? We didn't lose because of Lee last year, he won all of his playoff games, we lost because of the people behind him. It's kind of like Manning for Brady it's not an upgrade but a lateral movement. Nothing but the truth
