Tom Gordon's rehab didn't go smoothly tonight.

Gordon Hurt

POSTED: Wednesday, August 6, 2008, 8:46 PM

Righthander Tom Gordon, who has been on the 15-day DL since July 6 because of inflammation in his right elbow, left tonight's rehab assignment for single-A Clearwater because of discomfort in the same elbow. Gordon will fly to Philadelphia tomorrow to be examined by team doctor Michael Ciccotti.

Obviously, that isn't a good sign. It's been exactly a month since Gordon went on the DL and this certainly seems to set him back further.

Gordon was done when the season started. I feel a little sorry for the guy, but he has had a very long, and pretty successful career. But truth be told, I don't want to see him pitching for the Phillies again. It's time for him to retire.

Hmmm...not surprised about Gordon. Wonder if this will let Happ get into more games.

Yep, that's it. A roster spot is not going to be burned on him by September 1.

I just don't understand some of the disdain for Gordon. Aside from a handful of games this season, the guy has been an integral part of our pen. He had a 1.80 ERA in April, a 2.61 ERA in May, a single bad outing in June and one earned run in July before his injury.

I'd be lying if I said I was disappointed. Throw him on the scrap heap with Rudy Seanez, Turk Wendell, Wayne Gomes, and Heathcliff Slocumb. Isn't Ricky Botallico still employed in the Phillies organization? Let's promote him to fill the roster spot. At least he'll throw a good beanball.

Is Ken Howell available? What about Eddie Oropesa? Jerry Spradlin threw on the side on Tuesday as well. Mike Grace? Or what about Mike Mimbs? Toby Borland? Russ and/or Dennis Springer?

I'm sorry Gordon is hurting...aside from a few terrible outings, he's been a fairly solid contibutor in his Phils' career. But like others, I'm not too keen on him pitching again for the Phils...I think he should finally call it a day. He had a very respectable career and was able to get his life straightened-out. I wish him the best.

Tom Gordon deserves our respect. He has had a solid career in the majors and several good years for the Phils. Thanks for the memories Flash.

Thanks, "thebenjamin." You said it all. Gordon's been great elsewhere, done some good things here, but it's time for him to hang 'em up.

Gillick needs another arm for the Bullpen and JA Happ should be sent back to Lehigh Valley to resume his role as a "Starting" pitcher. Will Carrasco be a September call-up? Can he get 3 outs at the Major League level? I hope so.

Tough crowd. I'm with the benjamin, MrPhillie and tjc, Gordon had a good career and other than some bumps, pitched well for this team. Give the guy the respect he deserves. When Wagner left and he was our ONLY decent guy in the pen, he did his job well. If it's over, well done Flash.

Gordon is my hero. He managed to fake his way through 3 years with the phillies with a bad elbow and never miss a check. With those 7 kids to take care of as a single (never married) parent he'll be back next year-- hopefully not here.

Great game last night. This is the kind of baseball I like...good defense, good offense all on the SAME night. Let's win this afternoon's game and take the series.

Too bad. Count me in with the group that doesn't understand the disdain for Gordon among so many Phillies fans. Every reliever has some bad outings (see Lidge against Atlanta last week), but Gordon generally pitched very well for us despite some serious arm problems. It's not his fault that our front office expected a 40+-year old to be a bullpen workhorse. I have a feeling that we've seen the last of Flash in a Phillies uniform, and that's a shame.

Gordon was generally successful for the Phils, and as I fan, I am grateful. But as pertains to him suffering a setback, well...in the words of Billy Wagner: "F*ing shocker." Sorry, but not surprising at all. It is probably past the time for him to call it a career, though.

I'm not surprised he got hurt, nor am I surprised at all the negativity. Seems like this is the City of Brotherly Hate. I wish Flash well. He's had a very good if injury plagued career. Doubt we would have won the division last year without him.

Flash deserves a standing O! He battled through all kinds of problems. And YES, did provide lots of drama! Hate to be writing him off with no official word, but.....Best of luck, Flash!
