Gload placed on paternity list; Mayberry returns

PITTSBURGH -- The stay at triple-A Lehigh Valley lasted all of one day for John Mayberry Jr.

The outfielder is back in Pittsburgh with the Phillies to replace Ross Gload, who was placed on the paternity leave list Saturday.

Gload can stay on the list for 24 to 72 hours. It is a new roster option instituted by Major League Baseball this season.

Mayberry was 1 for 4 with the IronPigs in Charlotte on Friday night. This latest roster move does nothing to affect Mayberry's option status. In an option year, a team can recall and option a player as often as it wants without ramification.

If he spends more than 20 days in the minors this season, it uses up his third and final option year.

The lineup for Game 2 at PNC Park:

1. Jimmy Rollins 6
2. Placido Polanco 5
3. Chase Utley 4
4. Ryan Howard 3
5. Shane Victorino 8
6. Raul Ibanez 7
7. Domonic Brown 9
8. Dane Sardinha 2
9. Kyle Kendrick 1

Junior couldn't anticipate Gload will be needing a paternity leave?

Yeah, hard to believe the team didn't see this move a day earlier...could have avoided jerking Mayberry around so much.

Losing 6-2 to the Bucs again....this offense is terrible and I'm sure Amaro and Manuel know it will not change. They just painted themselves into a moneyless corner with ridiculous contracts to Howard, Ibanez, Lidge....and while it is nice to have really good starting pitching, seldom do one-dimensional teams win it all. At some point this team will have to score some runs, and will have to do it against very good pitching. Right now that doesn't seem possible.

RAJ is screwin the pooch. Gload should be dl'd. martinez should be offered back. mayberry and orr should be with the big club. but this wont happen because RAJ will keep martinez, andy reid style, to prove he's a genius. they did the same thing with herndon last year. they kept him on the roster all season instead of offering him back. For what reason? so he could spend the following year in triple a? i get rule 5 strategy, but in years when you have a ton of injuries you cant afford to use a roster spot solely to avoid offering back a 29 year old career minor leaguer.

M60tanker, I was thinking the same thing about Ruiz. Did you see the trainer talking to him during the game? Ruiz looked disgusted a little bit.

I think brining Mayberry up and down to the minors will ruin his confidence, he deserves a chance to play regularly
