Giles Released, Mayberry and Carrasco sent down

And the roster continues to settle.  The Phillies have released INF Marcus Giles, who was attempting a comeback after missing the entire 2008 season.  P Carlos Carrasco and OF John Mayberry Jr. have been optioned to Triple-A, and P Mike Koplove. OF Jason Ellison and INF Pablo Ozuna have been told that they will not make the opening day roster, but will travel to Philadelphia for the exhibition series against Tampa Bay.

These moves simply confirm what had become obvious. Giles batted .167 and lacked the defensive versatility of Miguel Cairo, who looks like he'll be the righty bat off the bench--unless the team makes a trade, which they'd like to do. The fast recoveries of Chase Utley and Pedro Feliz essentially ended Giles' audition.

Koplove has pitched well (1.23 ERA), but as a righty in a righty-heavy bullpen, faced long odds.  The Taschner trade was not good news for him.  Mayberry's and Carrasco's need for further development was clear.  Ellison and Ozuna were always headed for Triple-A, barring injuries to someone else.

anyone notice what a great spring Brunlett is having? 2 HRs 11 RBI? he seems to have bought a bat this year.

jeff: my guess is, you and wally both have it wrong. I don't think either Happ or Stairs will make the roster. It seems to me that Taschner was acquired for the express purpose of filling the 2nd lefty out of the pen role, for which Happ is not ideally suited. Unless Park blows up today, I believe he has earned the 5th starter's job, and if he should falter, can then be sent to the pen, and Happ called up to replace him. I think the roster is Rollins, Vic, Utley, Howard, Werth, Ibanez, Feliz, Ruiz starting, Dobbs, Bruntlett, Coste, Cairo and Jenkins on the bench (simply because Stairs is cheaper to release then Jenkins is), Hamels, Myers, Moyer, Blanton, Park in the rotation, and Lidge, Madson, Eyre, Durbin, Condrey, Taschner and Majewski in the bullpen. And when Romero returns, Taschner or Majewski is gone, whichever is pitching worse (assuming there are no injured players for Romero to replace).

Yes...Bruntlett has swung the bat well...but I am more excited about what a strong spring Joe Blanton has had.

RWR: I could see that roster, but I think Happ has earned a roster spot. I also like Park in teh Pen as he can give multiple innings, has a proven record there, and can spot start. I think Happ is a starter who hasn't done great in teh Pen and who won't be able to spot start. If he implodes, Park can always start instead.

RWR/Jeff G: I noticed that too about B&B. Plus when I was watching the game yesterday, I thought Blanton looked a bit thinner.

Dating back to last year, Happ has done nothing wrong to merit not getting the 5th spot. He pitched well in some big games for us last year, and until he really screws us I think he should get the position. Park was a reliever last year, and should go to the pen and be ready for any injuries or poor performances this year. Hamels is injury prone, and Moyer is 46 years old. Park may get his chance after all.....

I must concur with RWR- Gross who the heck cares about Brunlett he's a .250 pich hitter. Who is he going to replace late in the game? No one. If someone gets hurt he is a viable DEFENSIVE replacement. If he had a worthy bat he wouldn't be a util guy. RWR's assesment of the pitching situation is spot on. I don't know if it will happen that way but it should. Park wants the job he has earned the job and should get the job. The phillies used to generally go with experience, my fear is Amaro may want to put his own stamp on the rotation. He can do this by making a decision that imposes Happ on Cholly. I hope that Utley is not being rushed I was hoping they at least did what they did with Lidge last year to preserve him and give him another week. Personally early in camp I would have told him at the earliest he would return in Mid April thereby slowing him down a bit. Koplove and Majewski are great fillers if needed. I hope for Werth's sake that he stays healthy b/c I have a feeling if Mayberry gets another extended look he may have extra fuel to prove the f/o wrong....

Karen - I heard Joe lost a little weight (does this mean I can't refer to him as Tubby Joe anymore?), but that got overshadowed because Howard and Myers lost SO much weight. BTW: Howard looks like an absolute beast this year. He is going to have a crazy good year.

Gross, I think Wally's arguements are far better thought out than yours. FYI
