ST. LOUIS -- Joe Blanton looks to turn the tide at Busch Stadium, where a vicious thunderstorm dropped about an inch of rain in 20 minutes. Estimated first pitch is 8:40 Eastern time.
Blanton has the worst ERA (6.21) among pitchers in the National League with at least 80 innings. He's been bad. Real bad. But as Rich Dubee, the pitching coach, pointed out the other day, he believes three of Blanton's last five starts have been decent. He's close, Dubee says.
Charlie Manuel juggled his lineup, batting Placido Polanco leadoff for the first time this season. Ben Francisco is in left field, marking the third straight time he has started against a lefthanded pitcher. Can you say platoon? Manuel can't, insisting Raul Ibanez will play against lefties.
Jimmy Rollins, who is hitting .178 since June 22, was bumped down to sixth in the order.
