Brad Lidge almost game everybody a heart attack, but he struck out Corey Hart to end the game and give the Phillies a 3-1 victory.

Lidge left runners on second and third with the go-ahead run at the plate.

He threw 35 pitches.

Wonder if he can pitch tomorrow night if needed?

It's the Phillies' first win in the playoffs since 1993.

*

Brad Lidge is warming up in the top of the ninth. Cole Hamels allowed two hits and one walk in nine innings. He also struck out seven. Heck of a performance for Hamels.

*

Cole Hamels continues to deal.

We're entering the top of the 8th inning and it's 3-0.

*

Yovani Gallardo is finished.

Here's his line: four innings, three hits, three runs (no earned runs), five walks (one intentional) and three strikeouts. He threw 75 pitches, just 37 for strikes.

*

It's the top of the fifth inning in Game 1 of the National League division series. Here's what has happened so far:

Cole Hamels has been a stud.

The Brewers made some fielding miscues to hand the Phillies a 3-0 lead.

Hamels allowed a single to Corey Hart with two outs in the fifth to spoil his perfect game. He has struck out six Brewers so far, and has looked very, very sharp. Can't say the same about the Brewers defense. Carlos Ruiz hit a leadoff single in the third inning. Hamels followed with a sacrifice bunt. Brewers third baseman Bill Hall had a play at second, but he bobbled the ball and threw to first instead. Second baseman Rickie Weeks, who was covering first, dropped the ball, to put runners on first and second with no outs.

It was huge.

Yovani Gallardo retired Jimmy Rollins and Jayson Werth for two outs. Had Hall or Weeks made a play the inning would have been over. Instead Chase Utley hit a line drive to deep center field. It appeared centerfielder Mike Cameron took a bad route on the ball. He reached over his head to make the catch, but the ball fell out of his glove as both runners scored and Utley reached second for a double. Gallardo then intentionally walked Howard. But he also walked Pat Burrell and Shane Victorino to force in another run to make it 3-0.

The right Cole Hamels is on the mound today. The ace we've all been looking for. The Phils seem to be in command of this game, but they got plenty of help from the Brewers, who look like a nervous young team. If Cole keeps it up, it's ours. I'd love to see them pepper this bullpen a bit and add some runs now.

I don't know why they pitched Gallardo at all. He practically missed the entire season. Serves them right. Lets Go Phils!

I agree about starting Gallardo. I think they thought it would be clever and maybe he'd surprise us. (Did McCain pick him??) But it kind of blew up on them. Still, if the Brewers' defense hadn't botched things up, we could very well be looking at a 0-0 game right now.

I am listening to Manuel's postgame press conference right now. Charlie said more than once that he decided to go with Lidge in the 9th because that's his job, that's what he's in the pen for. That, plus Hamels had thrown 101 pitches.....Hamels was talking as well. All he said was that he figured he would go 8 and that he has all the confidence in the world in Lidge to pitch the 9th......Hamels was cruising and I would have loved to see him finish the game, but that's how the game is played now.....Gotta be concerned about Lidge. This is several high wire, 30+ pitch, 20+ minute saves in a row now.

Most likely we are going to need a repeat of Hamel's performance from Myers for us to have a shot tomorrow. Wouldn't it would be great to see the bats come to life, knock Sabathia around, and get us win #2.

Roger that bski. Why do Managers get paid if they mindlessly and mechnically make decisions based on a role. I think Charlie owes us a bit more thought.
Comment removed.

Come on "bski" ... high wire or not ... few do it better then LIDGE. He has carried the Phillies to the playoffs. Lidge should be our third in-a-row MVP.

Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled at the win and absolutely blown away but Cole Hamels. But. Our offense was poor today. The runs were gifts, and the hits that actually were hits (Utley's double is debatable) were scattered. And this was against a shaky kid starter and a series of run-of-the-mill relievers. Does the offense tend to rest on its laurels after getting a modest lead, or what? The entire approach will need to change against Sabathia, or we'll be looking at a split for sure.

I sure hope Lidge's luck holds out for a while longer...but as we all know...it will end sooner or later. Control is the key...walks are the killer...Manuel has not pulled him all year, even when it may have been prudent to do so...and he came out smelling like a rose....it must be our year.....GO PHILLIES

hey Todd, you got hamels' numbers wrong, he struck out 9 in 8 innings not 7 in 9 innings...

Blah, blah, blah. The team gets their first playoff win in 15 years to open the series with a 1-0 lead and the majority of the comments are still nothing but whining. What on earth would you guys do if the Phillies win the Series? You'd probably be disappointed because you wouldn't have anything to complain about for at least a week. Hamels absolutely dominated the Brewers and pitched a great game. Someone dared to compare Lidge to the Wild Thing? Are you freaking kidding? Lidge has had one of the most dominating seasons by a reliever in the history of baseball. His OPP AVG, K/BB and K/9IP numbers this year and throughout his career are absolutely sick. Lidge has saved 45 straight games now and the Phillies are 80-0 when leading after 8 innings now this season and you guys are second-guessing the manager for putting Lidge in and "worried" and "concerned" about our chances the rest of the series. I've got some news for you - this is playoff baseball. Teams don't make the playoffs because they regularly give up 7-8 runs per game. We're going to have to grind out runs like we did today. Other teams aren't just going to "let" us score and they sure aren't going to lay down just because we have a lead. Managers have to play the percentages and the odds. They don't have the luxury of 20/20 hindsight. If not for Utley's error, that runner never scores against Lidge today anyway. It technically counted as an "earned run" but you have to think he would have pitched differently with runners on second and third instead of first and second and wouldn't have had that wild pitch. With a runner on third, they aren't throwing any pitches in the dirt to get guys to chase so that guy probably never even scores without Utley's error. When you're up 30-0 and you've a dominating closer who hasn't blown a save all season, has a sub 2.00 ERA and is holding hitters to a .198 BA this year, you put him in and keep Hamels fresh for the rest of the playoffs.

Would someone please tell me why Pat swung at the first pitch grounding into a double play. Why can't we work the pitcher/ Why doesn;t cholly tell him DON'T SWING PAT UNTIL YOU HAVE TO. I just don't get it

JimG.....I don't think anybody's whining. Just being realistic. Believe me, we're all thrilled for the win! And I'm the one who compared Lidge to "Wild Thing". I didn't really mean he pitches like Mitch. Just that he has provided the same drama his last few outings. LOL!

When Hamels is lights out in game 4, we will all be happy he didn't throw 120 pitches

i am amazed everytime i here a comment or question like that. i remember coming home from school or on the weekends going up to the playground and playing speedball games for hours on end. probably thru a hundred pitches easy. here is a grown man playing this sport all of his life and 35 or 40 pitches is a big deal??
