Game 4: Pierre on top

POSTED: Monday, April 9, 2012, 9:56 AM

The wind is blowing hard to right field, so it's a good thing the Phillies have all those lefthanded power bats in their lineup.

Oh, whoops.

They will play meaningful baseball in South Philadelphia for the first time in 2012 this afternoon. Charlie Manuel will use his fourth different lineup combination in four games.

1. Juan Pierre 7
2. Placido Polanco 5
3. Jimmy Rollins 6
4. Hunter Pence 9
5. Shane Victorino 8
6. John Mayberry Jr. 3
7. Carlos Ruiz 2
8. Freddy Galvis 4
9. Cole Hamels 1

Here are the Phillies' career numbers against Miami Marlins starter Anibal Sanchez:

PA AB H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS
Shane Victorino 44 41 9 1 0 1 2 3 7 .220 .273 .317 .590
Jimmy Rollins 34 30 10 0 0 1 2 4 4 .333 .412 .433 .845
Carlos Ruiz 30 22 6 2 0 0 3 7 5 .273 .467 .364 .830
Brian Schneider 24 21 3 0 0 0 2 3 3 .143 .250 .143 .393

Hunter Pence 15 15 5 1 0 0 2 0 0 .333 .333 .400 .733
Laynce Nix 9 9 2 0 0 0 0 0 1 .222 .222 .222 .444
Ty Wigginton 8 8 1 1 0 0 0 0 0 .125 .125 .250 .375
Joe Blanton 3 1 0 0 0 0 1 0 1 .000 .000 .000 .000
Cole Hamels 3 3 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 .000 .000 .000 .000
John Mayberry 2 2 1 0 0 1 2 0 1 .500 .500 2.000 2.500
Pete Orr 2 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 .000 .000 .000 .000
Total 207 184 47 6 1 5 19 19 33 .255 .327 .380 .707

DJ Jazzy Jeff is running the block party outside. Elena Della Donne is throwing out the first pitch. Go crazy!

Please go ahead and sign Fontenot to play second. At least he's a major league player. Enough of the Galvis "GDP" experiment. We need at least a little offense out of that position.

PhilsPhan, Cespedes and Victorino can play anywhere in the OF. I believe Pence can play LF, don't you think so? Galvis is as good a fielder as Rollins. You are basically getting a more versatile and younger player, who happens to hit for average and power for the same money, while getting the same steady defense at SS with the younger Galvis. By doing that you don't need to commit to both Victorino or Pence when they become FA and instead can concentrate in getting younger at 2B and 3B. But I guess it's too late for that.

italia, one good season in Cuba last year? Really? As a 23 year old he was part of Cuba's National Team that competed in the 2009 World Baseball Classic and made the All Classic Team. Some of the best Major leaguers from all over the world played, including our own Shane Victorino and Jimmy Rollins, not to mention Ryan Braun, Jeter, Longoria, David Wright, etc. Get informed before commenting.

YES! This is exactly the line up I posted this morning. Let's hope we can get some offense going for Cole...was hoping to hear about his new contract this morning...still hoping!

Its too early for all this stress guys. I have the same concerns as the rest of you but lets give them a few weeks. The Phils have never hit in Pittsburgh for some reason, thats not new. I do agree with Juan Pierre needing to play he can get on base and that is what we need right now. The offense concerns me but I think it will me manageable when Howie gets back in the lineup. What may end up being the bigger concern is the bullpen. We are putting a lot on Bastardo and Stutes being the same guys from last year. You never know what ya get with relievers, even the guys that get the 2-4 million contracts seem like a coin toss every year.

    Galvis should bat behind Cole.

Zorro - so now we've got Cespedes and Galvis in the lineup instead of Rollins and Mayberry. That doesn't sound like much upgrade to me unless you think Cespedes is going to put up MVP type numbers (way too early to say that) - Galvis doesn't look like a major league hitter and you've promoted him to full time starter. I just don't see how it fits their needs - not saying it's a horrible idea, I just don't see it.

Mayberry will play 1B until Howard is ready, which is not a given. Then you have a nice problem with 4 OF and Victorino a Free Agent to be. Trade bait?

Likethe others, there are some players now that must go back to Lehigh or just dropped. No one will want them. Then replace Herndon and of course, someone will have to take Qualls place for a bit. Already 2 games behind, this series will probably make or break this team already. If they are 5 games out at the end of it, the season is simply gone and trades will have to be made. I see this team in 3rd place or lower, all year. The 5 yrs. are now over unless a miracle happens. I still believe in miracles but time is already against this team of hitters who resemble the Sisters of Mary squad.

Having 4 quality OFers is a good problem. Not having even one MLB caliber SS is a really bad problem. On balance I would not have done it pre-season. Which is not to say it would have been a bad move, if he continues to mash then it would look like genius, but you couldn't know that based on the information they had at the time.

Koons, you're joking right? If they are 5 back in April they are dead? The Cardinals were 9 back in September. Listen, I want them to win this series as much as anyone, but the first 6 games of the season is like the equivalent of the first half of the first game of the NFL season. Let's keep things in perspective.

The bottom line is , because Howard and Utley are injured, and one or both may never be a major contributor again. Amaro through injuries is getting his small ball. He just failed to sign anyone who could hit. Maybe it's time to turn his job over to Gillick or someone else who understands it takes hitters to score runs. This team as it stands is inept.
