Game 4: Pierre on top
Matt Gelb, Inquirer Staff Writer
The wind is blowing hard to right field, so it's a good thing the Phillies have all those lefthanded power bats in their lineup.
Oh, whoops.
They will play meaningful baseball in South Philadelphia for the first time in 2012 this afternoon. Charlie Manuel will use his fourth different lineup combination in four games.
1. Juan Pierre 7
2. Placido Polanco 5
3. Jimmy Rollins 6
4. Hunter Pence 9
5. Shane Victorino 8
6. John Mayberry Jr. 3
7. Carlos Ruiz 2
8. Freddy Galvis 4
9. Cole Hamels 1
Here are the Phillies' career numbers against Miami Marlins starter Anibal Sanchez:

DJ Jazzy Jeff is running the block party outside. Elena Della Donne is throwing out the first pitch. Go crazy!
Have a question? Send it to Matt Gelb's Mailbag.
I would use this lineup everyday. Please no more Wig, Nix or Schnied. Maybe even flop Mayberry & Ruiz. therev
This is ( and needs to be) the lineup until the Piece is back. JP in left and JMJ at first. Charlie only needed 3 games to figure out that Nix and Wiggs are bench players, not starters. KvK
If Nix never plays again it will be too soon. Blue and White
This is probably your best offensive lineup, of course depending on how Pierre plays (I'm not sold on him but that was a big hit in yesterday's game). The problem they have is that Mayberry is their best LF, he is a defensive question mark at first just due to inexperience, and Pierre is sub par in LF. They probably get away with this at home, since LF is so small, but in a bigger park it is hard to take Mayberry's glove out of LF. Phils Phan 28
OH, BTW, just in response to the first poster, I really think they need to look for a new backup catcher. Not only is Schneider very nearly an automatic out (and has been for a year), can he not throw to second? I did not watch every second of the game yesterday due to family being over, but I think there were three stolen base attempts, and not only were all 3 successful, but I don't think he made a throw to 2nd on any of them. Add to that the dropped strikeout play, and then tell me what Schneider is bringing to the team? Phils Phan 28
PhilsPhan28 unfortunately makes a very good point. They need JMJ's defense in left in lots of situations. Look at game 1, he made 2 phenomenal catches that Pierre wouldn't have even been close to. So we will have to deal with some questionable 1B-men for awhile at least for some games. kilo_005
Call Bowker....see if he needs a roomie over there....ship Nix STAT NewMick314
That Cespedes kid would look pretty good hitting in the middle of the line up. .308, 3 HR 7 RBI, 1.077 SLG in his first 4 games. We signed J-Roll to basically the same contract the 27 year old slugger got from Oakland. EL Zorro
What Schneider brings to the team is the fantastic record the Phillies had last year in games he started. Everyone wants the TEAM to win, and they won at a higher percentage with him catching than their overall winning percentage! He gives Chooch a day off when Worley pitches, AND the team wins! Works for me. SEEK313
I agree the with Zorro. Rollins' contract is another example of overpaying for old players. Pierre needs to play. wmontanez27
I dont know why people and sports talk show hosts don't talk about this more, but following 2007, Gillick FIRED the entire coaching staff (except for Charlie) due to lack of production (and that team had MUCH MORE TALENT than this team). In 2008 they go to and win the WS. Amaro needs to step up and realize Pete McKannan, Gregg Gross and Sam Perlozo are no Jimy Williams and Davey Lopes. Charlie is no LaRussa, Girardi, Maddon and needs help managing tactical situtions. Citizenc92
"Record when X Player starts" is a phony stat. It's always used with bit players where the sample size is too small, it often correlates with some other fact (for Schneider, catching Worley often), and it always returns to the mean over time. If the team won all those games because of Schneider he'd be playing more often. They didn't, and he isn't. Phils Phan 28
So we should have signed Cespedes instead of Rollins, huh? So, do you have them moving Pence or Victorino to SS? You can argue easily that every team in the league undervalued him (although you'd be doing that based on just a few games of results), but he doesn't address a positional need for the Phillies, and it is a false choice between him and Rollins. Phils Phan 28
the 3 years 30 million for rollins isnt bad....and nobody knew how good cespedes was gonna be all he put out was a workout video and had one great season last year in cuba italia1234
Solid lineup. No Nix, Wiggs, or Schneider? Is this a rare moment of lucidity in the Phillies bureaucracy?!? thejavadrinker
