Game 153: Grapefruit League in September

It's raining in South Philadelphia and the tarp is on the field at Citizens Bank Park. Let's play two meaningless baseball games!

And the lineup Charlie Manuel has drawn up for Game 1 is one that wouldn't even pass for a Grapefruit League road squad. Take a gander:

1. Shane Victorino 8
2. Wilson Valdez 6
3. John Mayberry Jr. 3
4. Hunter Pence 9
5. Ben Francisco 7
6. Erik Kratz 2
7. Pete Orr 4
8. Michael Martinez 5
9. Kyle Kendrick 1

Who will win the NL Cy Young Award?

  • 523 (16.8%)
  • 649 (20.8%)
  • 1738 (55.8%)
  • 203 (6.5%)
  • 3113

It'll be the Phillies debut for Kratz, who hit .288 with 15 home runs at triple-A Lehigh Valley. He's played nine career major-league games, all with Pittsburgh last season. Kratz went to Christopher Dock High in Lansdale, so it's a cool day for him.

Mayberry has never batted third in a major-league lineup. The infield of Mayberry-Orr-Valdez-Martinez is, um, yeah.

Meanwhile, Hunter Pence has still played every inning of every game since his July 30 acquisition. He's hitting .317/.386/.541 in 207 plate appearances as a Phillie. Maybe he rests tonight.

So go crazy.
