SAN FRANCISCO — The Phillies will play their 12th game of 2012 tonight. Charlie Manuel will use his 10th different lineup.

1. Juan Pierre 7
2. Shane Victorino 8
3. Jimmy Rollins 6
4. Hunter Pence 9
5. Ty Wigginton 5
6. Laynce Nix 3
7. Carlos Ruiz 2
8. Freddy Galvis 4
9. Cliff Lee 1

This version does not include both Placido Polanco and John Mayberry Jr., both of whom have scuffled to start the season. How did Manuel decide on his lineup?

"That's the one I wanted to put in," he said.

No, really.

"How did I decide on it? Nix is 8 for 20 with a homer off this guy. Wigginton is 3 for 9 with a homer. Those guys have seen them, have some hits on him, so why shouldn't I put them in the lineup? Pierre has been getting on base. We're looking for somebody with some success on him."

Here are the Phillies' career numbers against Matt Cain:

Jimmy Rollins 22 20 7 2 3 1 5 2 3 .350 .409 .900 1.309

Manuel said he planned to rest Polanco on Thursday but decided Wednesday was better given Wigginton's numbers against Cain. Those, of course, are in a small sample size.
