Game 104: A new reality

POSTED: Wednesday, August 1, 2012, 3:39 PM
Outfielder Nate Schierholtz makes his debut as a Phillie in today's game. (Marcio Jose Sanchez/AP)

Will Domonic Brown play well enough to be an everyday player for the Phillies next season?
Yes. He has all the tools to be a starting outfielder.
No. The Phillies should look for another answer in the outfield.

WASHINGTON — Life is different for these Phillies, who are now reduced to playing out the string. With 20 percent of the roster changed in 24 hours, there will be new twists.

Take Wednesday's lineup for example:

1. Jimmy Rollins 6
2. Nate Schierholtz 9
3. Chase Utley 4
4. Ryan Howard 3
5. John Mayberry Jr. 8
6. Domonic Brown 7
7. Kevin Frandsen 5
8. Erik Kratz 2
9. Vance Worley 1

They will face Edwin Jackson, who starts for Washington.

8 is not Mayberry's jersey number, it's the scoring designation for his position tonight--centerfield.

    Wow!

I momentarily asked where Victorino was and made myself kind of sad. It's still new.

seek313, it wouldn't matter if Piere hit 1st because Pence couldn't drive him in anyway.

Hire Juan Pierre as hitting coach.

That's why he has to go. I am not all that passionate either for or against Uncle Cholly, but on a mediocre team you need a strong manager, someone who really knows x's and o's, someone who understands the numbers, someone who will stress fundamentals. None of that is Cholly.

Did either of you give any thought that it might be because Chooch's foot needs more rest? Charlie should know the day-to-day health of his players more than any of us. And catching takes enough toll on a players body.

They have to see what Schierholtz can do but I'd still play Pierre.

Abreu would be a better lead off hitter than Rollins and he would cost very very little.

Brown needed to stay in the minors for at least the entire season. Its not going to work out pulling him up and down like a yo-yo.

Other than the usual out of place leadoff, I like it.

Why would RAJ add Abreu? They don't need outfielders, they have all the outfielders they need. Mayberry, Brownie, Pierre, Schierholtz, Nix on occasion. Very few outfielders could break into that rotation.
