Game 104: A new reality

POSTED: Wednesday, August 1, 2012, 3:39 PM
Outfielder Nate Schierholtz makes his debut as a Phillie in today's game. (Marcio Jose Sanchez/AP)

Will Domonic Brown play well enough to be an everyday player for the Phillies next season?
Yes. He has all the tools to be a starting outfielder.
No. The Phillies should look for another answer in the outfield.

WASHINGTON — Life is different for these Phillies, who are now reduced to playing out the string. With 20 percent of the roster changed in 24 hours, there will be new twists.

Take Wednesday's lineup for example:

1. Jimmy Rollins 6
2. Nate Schierholtz 9
3. Chase Utley 4
4. Ryan Howard 3
5. John Mayberry Jr. 8
6. Domonic Brown 7
7. Kevin Frandsen 5
8. Erik Kratz 2
9. Vance Worley 1

They will face Edwin Jackson, who starts for Washington.

Hmmm interesting lineup. All the other team has to do is throw a lefty at this lineup and they will be shut out.

Mayberry is our only right-handed-hitting outfielder, unless you count Mini-Mart, who could play center. Looks like we'll have at least 4 lefties batting every game.

Isn't it ironic that the Dodgers just designated Bobby Abreu for assignment to make room for Shane Victorino? Maybe Rube will try to get Abreu back on the cheap!!

Oh how interesting it would have been to see what might have happened if Charlie had put Pierre in the lead-off spot all year.......

Why is Mayberry wearing Shane's number already? I thought that there was typically a grace period before numbers of longterm players were re-used.

You are kidding, right? You have to be kidding. Please, tell us you're kidding.

The number '8' next to Mayberry's name is the position he is playing. You know, center field.

By the way, Chase Utley didn't change his number from 26 to 4, Ryan Howard didn't change his number from 6 to 3 and Jimmy Rollins didn't change his number from 11 to 6.

    Hey WFChamps:
Any lineup with Rollins, Utley, and Howard does not look like a AAA lineup. Let's cut back on the opiates . . .

Good. they needed a kick in the pants. Vic and Pence's bad habits were dragging things down. Now we got some young hungry players in the lineup and I think they'll do some damage like yesterday. can't wait to see what Brown can do. Schierholtz will surprise I think...

rollins (.250), utley (.236), howard (.217) are putting up the same numbers that AAA players probably would.

ahathaway - "8" is to show he's playing centerfield. He didn't take Shane's number.
