Yesterday, the Giants were in Washington to celebrate their World Series victory on the White House lawn. Today, they return to Philadelphia for the first time since dog piling on the mound at Citizens Bank Park.
It's a barometer of sorts -- as much of a barometer a series in late July can be. Both of these teams seek offensive upgrades and could be targeting the same player (Carlos Beltran) in these final days before the trade deadline.
If you think the Phillies have had offensive problems, it's all relative. San Francisco is 13th in the league in batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. They are 15th in OPS.
But they have pitching. And they have Tim Lincecum, who takes the mound tonight in the opener against Vance Worley. Ryan Howard is the only one with decent success against The Freak:
Charlie Manuel will field a familiar lineup against Lincecum, with one exception:
1. Jimmy Rollins 6
2. Michael Martinez 5
3. Chase Utley 4
4. Ryan Howard 3
5. Shane Victorino 8
6. Raul Ibanez 7
7. Domonic Brown 9
8. Brian Schneider 2
9. Vance Worley 1
