I'll be back on the beat tomorrow, but in the meantime here is Craig Barnes' game story and notebook, the latter a report on his conversation with Jimmy Rollins yesterday.

Saw a recent David Letterman line that made me laugh: "This just in: George Steinbrenner has ordered the Yankees back on steroids."

Well, A-Rod's set to return soon, in time for the Phillies' visit to the new Yankee Stadium in late May. That'll coincidentally be one of my only weekends off this season, because my wife has a birthday that Saturday.  Can't say that I will regret missing that fraudulent, taxpayer-robbing, Bronx parkland-plundering, half-empty bandbox.

Looking forward to the Phils series against that other NY team the Mutts. Hopefully they'll be able to sweep them away!

Got to feel a little sorry for Yanks fans. And more so for upstate taxpayers. That stadium has bad karma. Phils should wear rings there. It'll be a long time before Yankees are World Champs again.

I don't see what's so bad about the Yankees' performance or attendance so far. I'm no Yankees fan, but 44,000 in attendance is pretty darn good. And a .500 record early in the season isn't terrible. I'm pretty sure they'll be competitive through the season as usual. As for the new stadium - It does make a bad impression to have the premium seats unfilled, but if you outprice them, learn the hard way. (Agree in sympathy for upstate taxpayers, however.)

Forgot to say that I hope the Phils beat them soundly. May the HRs fly out of there only from the Phillies' bats!

gbrettfan, I live in the NY market. You have to know that this is a 200 million dollar payroll in a 1.5 billion dollar stadium. So far, aj and cc have been so-so. texiera is flirting with a 200 average. they just got swept by the bosox. mariano blew a save. their bullpen is in tatters. and they're taking a beating for all the empty seats at their stadium. And on May 12th the Selena Roberts ARod book comes out. In other words this ain't your daddy's 500 baseball club. Lots of issues - all kinds of pr nightmares - with more to come. Right now they're an easy target.

That's nice you're taking off for your wife's birthday. How are you making out on your laundry? You kind of left us hanging on that.

How kind of you to ask. Second time in Clearwater was much smoother. And one of the many perks of living in Philly is that we now have laundry in the building, rather than three blocks a way, as was the case in Brooklyn. So my clothes are clean, and I don't smell like a college kid. Isn't the Internet wonderful? Just think, readers went more than a century without knowing anything at all about their beat writers' laundry.

Back to the Phillies amd Jamie Moyer more specifically. When it comes to discussions on who holds the honor being the staff ace, why don't we hear any votes for Jamie? Since 2006 when both Moyer and Hamels joined the team, Moyer is 38-22, Myers is 28-28 and playoff/WS MVP Hamels is 38-25. Moyer led the team in wins last year with 16 before Hamels established himself in the postseason. Moyer is off to a solid start again this year while the other two are so-so at this point. I'll venture if Jamie's fastball was 92mph instead of 82mph, he'd get more nods as the staff ace.

Hrmm...New Yankee Stadium surrenders a prodigious number of HRs to right and right-center, their bullpen is in tatters, and in 4 weeks, the Phillies are headed there for a weekend series with all their left-handed power and penchant for hammering opposing bullpens? I can't wait! (Hopefully the Phils pitching staff solves its own gopher-ball issues before then, though!)

And oh yeah, hey, Andy, why aren't you posting 24-7 to accomodate Phillies fans globally, huh??? What's up with that? Are you too good for Phils fans down under, or in the land of the rising sun??? (j/k - sorry, jeff, couldn't resist.)

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Follow him on Twitter here.

Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
