Outfielder Ben Francisco has been traded to the Blue Jays. (Gene J. Puskar/AP)

Instead of tendering Ben Francisco a contract, the Phillies have traded the outfielder to Toronto for minor-league lefthander Frank Gailey.

Francisco, 30, made $1.18 million in 2011 and was due a raise through the arbitration process. He likely would have made less than $2 million in 2012.

He began 2011 as the team's starting right fielder but was on the bench by the end of May. His defining moment as a Phillie will be the pinch-hit, three-run home run in Game 3 of the National League division series against the Cardinals.

Ultimately, the Phillies decided there wasn't space for Francisco, who was used sparingly on Charlie Manuel's bench. That unit has undergone a massive overhaul this winter with the additions of Jim Thome, Ty Wigginton and Laynce Nix. With backup catcher Brian Schneider re-signed and Wilson Valdez likely to fill another spot, the bench is full. They will need another position player while Ryan Howard recovers from left Achilles surgery, but that will not be Francisco.

Wigginton stands to be the primary righthanded bat off the bench, a role Francisco filled for much of his two-and-a-half seasons in Philadelphia. It's possible Wigginton spends the majority of time at first base in Howard's absence, which could leave Manuel without a righthanded bat off the bench when both Wigginton and John Mayberry Jr. start games.

By most accounts, Michael Cuddyer is no longer an option for the Phillies and the free agent will soon decide between the Twins and Rockies. The Phillies have not seriously considered Josh Willingham, another righthanded bat on the market.

Ruben Amaro Jr. said he had trade discussions with "20 to 25" teams at the winter meetings and could decide to acquire another righthanded bat through those means. The non-tender deadline at midnight Monday could create more free-agent options. (Keep an eye on a player like Ryan Spilborghs, who could be non-tendered by Colorado. The Phillies have liked him before.) Or they could simply stick with the current bats.

Gailey, 26, is a Philadelphia native. He attended Archbishop Carroll and West Chester University. The 5-foot-9 lefty posted a 3.41 ERA across single A and double A in 2011. He's only pitched 30 innings in double A over five minor-league seasons.

The Phillies now have 39 players on their 40-man roster.

See this as a move for a roster spot. Ruben must have his next move ready.

boy they're really gonna miss the usual pinch-hitting strikeout with one out and runner in scoring position, culminating in a big pinch hit every 2 years

This could be the move we'll all look back on at the end of the year and say "man, we should've held on to Ben Francisco".

I see Ben made 1.18 here, 1.8 on high cheese. Which is correct?

Ruben Amaro must be lazy and not want to spend much time at work. He is building a roster of quick working pitchers, free swinging out-makers, and now Francisco gets jettisoned as punishment for extending the divisional series an additional game. Ben is a classy player who did a solid job all around in his 2.5 years with the Phillies, but he is one of those guys who inexplicably couldn't make it into yuk-it-up Chollie's good graces.

With Aramis Ramirez signing with the Brewers, Amaro's Plan B in the Rollins negotiations has now gone by the boards. Apparently Rollins is getting closer and closer to staying with the Phillies. I just hope Ruben doesn't tie the organizations hands too tightly by overpaying for Rollins in both years and money. Still wouldn't mind trading for Aviles from the Red Sox. Good one-year stop-gap until the Phils can figure out what to do long-term.

Phillies are going to be mediocre. No WCS in 2012. Sorry but thanks for playing.

Jtj60: not sure by what you mean. Ben was a starter when the season opened. Or did you not read the article? He did not produce and was benched. I like Ben a lot but he had more than a fair shake to be an every day player. He came up short. He did not pinch hit well. It sounds like you blame Charlie for Ben not making it. I don't see how you can reach that conclusion. Unless you just like to bash Charlie.

Ben normally isn't good enough to start. But he hit .259 with the Phillies over 2.5 years as a 4th outfielder, better hitting than they got from (ahem) their free agent SS or their regular poor fielding LFer over that time or their new utility man Wiggington did over that time. For some reason, Manuel didn't use him regularly or get him regular at bats. Chollie's that way. He plays favorites and it hurts the club.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
