Fontenot joins Phillies
Bob Brookover, Inquirer Baseball Columnist
Mike Fontenot does not have to think long and hard about his best moment at Citizens Bank Park.
Without question, it occurred on Oct. 23, 2010 when the San Francisco Giants came to town and pulled out a 3-2 victory to win their National League Championship Series with the Phillies. Nine days later, Fontenot celebrated a World Series title after the Giants beat the Texas Rangers in five games.
Now a member of the Phillies after being promoted from triple-A Lehigh Valley Friday night, Fontenot didn't want to talk too much Saturday about that Game 6 victory that abruptly ended the Phillies' 2010 season.
"I just know one thing -- it was fun playing here," Fontenot said. "I'm a part of the Phillies now and that's great. I always remember that series, the atmosphere in both parks was unbelievable. It was fun to be a part of."
Fontenot went 2-for-8 in that series. He had joined the Giants in August after being traded from the Chicago Cubs. The infielder spent all of last season with San Francisco, but was released by the team in spring training this year.
He signed two weeks later with the Iron Pigs and earned his promotion by hitting .300 with six doubles and six RBIs in 15 games.
To make room for Fontenot on the 25-man roster, the Phillies optioned catcher Erik Kratz to Lehigh Valley and transferred infielder Michael Martinez from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list.
Manager Charlie Manuel said he will use Fontenot at second base, shortstop and third base.
"He can hit some," Manuel said. "He swings the bat well. We'll try to work him in, get him comfortable and see where we go from there."
World Series here we come! Fontenot is the final piece of the puzzle Bobphxville

And I will bet you two negative nerds are Philadelphia fans... JosephL
The only bad news is that they've now exhausted all the players that were succeeding at LHV. Anybody else they bring up would be a stretch, based on how they're playing down there. Except for maybe Tyler Cloyd, and they don't need a starter. drbob1
Time to rotate Managers and coaches to see whee they best fit. General Manager position we need to find someone with a Doctorate Bull Throwing. tulsaphil
Hopefully, what Fontenot gives the Phillies is an option a 2B besies Galvis. I'd still like to see Galvis in AAA playing shortstop. Hopefully, this move makes Fontenot the utility infielder, and maybe (praying) Utley heads down to Clearwater to get ready for his Memorial Day call up (please?). drhoffman
We are now praying for a player who if he can hit is unable to run. The rehab seems like it started October 2011 and will continue thru 2013 when the contract expired, unless Amaro extends it 3 years. tulsaphil
We may see Cloyd yet if he keeps on going well, and one of the rotation goes sour or gets hurt. Isn't that how we gained a Worley last year? If Fontenot can continue his AAA run, that would be a plus, AND he has the experience of being a World Series champion as well, not matter how small his part. He already knows as many do that one way back to the Fall Classic could be through the Fightin's. Call them the Scrappin's for now, but in spite of the troubles we are still only 5 games behind the Nats. As much as I want to see them do well, they do not have experience with handling the pressure of holding a lead in the standings...though I'm sure all of them believe in themselves as winners who have yet to achieve. Could be another great battle this year, like it was with others in the past.
But Fontenot needs to be inserted now so that his hot run does not cool off much. Of course, if Galvis keeps getting a few more hits, he won't be relinguishing his spot just yet. Orr has hit, but does not field with the same magic as Galvis, not at second anyway. Third okay. How speedy is Mike? That's an important part of being a bencher now. ocpizza
Galvis needs to learn 3rd base. With his quickness, speed at which he learned 2nd, and arm strength it shouldn't take long. This would give him more opportunities for at bats. With his defense we can only hope he puts the O together. KINGOFZED- Galvis is no 3rd baseman. (If) Utley was healthy, you'd be more inclined to let Rollins move over to 3rd, due to his declining range both ways, and his penchant for power, put him in the 6th slot, and tell him to earn his $$. Galvis then stays at his native position. Polanco moves to 2nd, his native and original position, or becomes utility and platoon with Utley.
Doesn't matter either way. None of this is happening. 24sDad
Good move and also hope they get him started now. Offense at second has just improved significantly. On another front, did anyone else see that Bryce Harper bloody eye thing? Show biz in his blood. After striking out he stops and gives the camera a side shot of his little blood trickle before getting back to the dugout. escapedcamden4monterey
If you're watching the game right now, Good for you! Homersez
He's an upgrade over Pete Orr. AvoidSundanceVacations
if this guy is so good how come he wasnt here from the start???? Is this a serious question???? DSU
Time for another talking to. Forget it this team is horrible. No talk can help, unloading the dead weight might help. Pence and Wigginton were awful tonight. Getting men in scoring position is a death sentence for this team. It will only get worse. Not even Halladay can help these bums. eaglesman1
