Focus turns to Hamels

(Jeffrey Phelps / Associated Press)

To no surprise, Ruben Amaro Jr. said Monday during Jimmy Rollins' re-introduction that he is "comfortable" with his current 2012 roster.

"We’re keeping our mind and eyes open," Amaro said.

More importantly, with the heavy lifting out of the way, Amaro can turn his attention to re-signing Cole Hamels. First, the general manager will go on vacation. But once the calendar turns to 2012, he will engage Hamels' agent, John Boggs, in negotiations.

Hamels is a free agent following the 2012 season. He has a final, fourth year of arbitration that could pay him upward of $14 million.

"Right now we have to try to deal with the arbitration process," Amaro said. "But at some point we’ll get with his agent and start discussing things. We’ll see how it goes. If we get into a negotiation, it will probably be quiet, we’re not going to have public discussions about them, but at some point we’ll have those discussions, probably after the first of the year."

Amaro expects those discussions to be amicable.

"I have got no indication that Cole wants to go anywhere and I think Cole knows we want to keep him," Amaro said. "I think if you read the quotes I made about Jimmy, they’re going to be the same."

Hamels is too smart to re-sign with this aging sinking ship when he could go get more money and win with teams like Yanks or Redsox --Chollie's idiotic managerial moves and bad offense cost Hamels at least 5 or more win annually -- and indeed a legitimate chance to be in Cy Young contention last yr... as Phils pay huge salaries to Halladay and Lee next few years Philly fans will lament the loss of the best of all of them as Hamels will clearly outperform the others over next 5 years --and indeed is the only one of the 3 to have a WS ring-- and considering the Rube's cluelessness and inability to put together a well-balanced team, Cole is likely to win more WS rings elsewhere while Halladay and Lee are stuck with Rube's deja vous offense-challenged teams

Warbiscuit must be new to baseball. If the Phils stink in 3 years, imagine the haul they can get from contenders when they trade Lee, Halladay, Hamels and Howard (AL).

I agree COMPLETELY. It's exactly what will happen. The Phils will be a .500 team, or thereabouts by 2014, and we'll end up skimming the top 5 or 6 prospects in basbeall, and ready to make another run in 2016.

So warbiscuit thinks the Phillies are an aging team, but the Red Sox and Yankees are not? Hmmm.... interesting. Nobody can predict 3 years from now, but the Phillies are one of the 3 best teams in baseball now, if not the best, so I can't imagine Hamels is looking to get away. If there is a holdup it will be on the length of the deal, not Hamels desire to move elsewhere.

With signing of Rollins the degree of Phills success will revolve around health of certain players. Particularly Polanco. Utley, Howard and Blanton. If Placido is healthy he will give team 290-315 average with outstanding defense. PP now 36 and with a history of back issues could be a concern. No need to talk about Chase's talent level but his health level is different. The way Chase ran the bases you would never guess anything is wrong. Utley would do well in leadoff role but PHills need is him to be middle of order hitter. If Utley's skill does not return it would be a great shame. Players like Utley have been few for Phillies Both Utley and Polanco are both heady players if one goes down my guess Wiggington would fill in. If Howard's injury keeps him out Mayberry will play first but then who plays left? Thome has played very little in field over last few years doubt he would be answer at 1st. Mayberry showed a lot of talent last year. If he can get his average up to 275 against righthanders he can make big impact. If healthy Blanton figures to be 500 pitcher. Then again with the top 3 that may be all you need from 5th starter... I would love to see Phills sign Hamels but not to 7 year contract. Very risky to give any pitcher 7 years. Yhe market will force 5 year deal. Let him come into spring training and prove himself healthy. The signing of Willis could be fruitfull. He's dominated lefties and Braves the major competition is overloaded with lefties. ..If someone reads I can help the team more batting leadoff and read that to be I DEMAND to bat leadoff their just feeding their agenda.

I dont think Charlie has mismanaged Cole.... Now if you want to say that he lets Roy and Cliff stay in games too long I'd buy that!
But Cole has been on a steady path..why can't he win a Cy in front of the Untouchables? (Cole and the Untouchables- got a ring to it?)
Warbiscuit has been chewing too much hay.
What I like is RAJ isn't trying to do too much witb the line up. For those Blanton critics I say...leave the man alone- he has been mostly solid for us. I expect him to have a great year with all of his recuperation and perhaps rebuilding in the rehab. The only hole I'm concerned with is Howard. Ryan is not gonna be much good before the allstar break. I forsee a rotation of Mayberry, Thome and Wigginton (anyone else?) for the first three months. I think Thome will benefit from early frequent play to keep him oiled up for the second half as a PH. I also predict the D-Train will get 2 starts... against the Braves! hahah Merry Christmas Philly!

What is in those biscuits warbiscuit is eating? The Phillies A, AA, and AAA clubs were all in the playoffs last season. True the AAA club owed much to Sandberg but the others--their talents are coming up now through the farm system and should be at the ready before the proclaimed decline. The AAA club is teaming with relief pitchers now and some long shots but the AA club has a real shot to fill the voids age will produce. The beauty of looking at this organization top to bottom is finding that depth and watching it compete as well! AND win at those levels. Hamels is not going anywhere and neither is the Phillies dominance of the East. And Charlie's doing quite well--try winning 102 games with all those injuries!
