The Phillies have placed Scott Eyre on the 15-day disabled list with a left calf strain, and recalled RHP Kyle Kendrick from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

UPDATE: A lot of you had the same reaction as me when you learned that the Phils were replacing a situational lefty with a righty starter: wha? According to our Ray Parrillo, who is at the ballpark tonight, Charlie Manuel said Kendrick will be useful as a long man in these upcoming series against A.L. teams (Bastardo against Boston? If I were a fantasy owner, now is when I'd sell high).  Jack Taschner will assume most of Eyre's duties.

ktdb05 ... Kendrick deserves credit for all those wins, but if you watched him pitch (or looked at his stats) you could tell there was no way he was going to sustain his success. Even when he was going well, he was putting way too many guys on base.

ktdb05 - Those stats are meaningless. A lot of young pitchers have success when they first come up because other teams do not have a great scouting report on them. Once the hitters figured out Kendrick's garbage, they were teeing off on him. He doesn't have the ability to get lefties out anymore, and he is of almost no value to the club.

When one of his relievers costs the Phillies a game, Charlie Manuel likes to bring them back the next game so they can blow two games in a row.

Ruben's first strikeout of 2009. Maybe the best that will come from this is the Phils coming to terms with the fact that Kendrick should be the 5th starter on a basement-dwelling team. Does Ed Wade need another dog?

With the short starts we got from Happ, Hamels, and Moyer, the extra inning games against the Mets, and who we are facing, I can understand the need for a guy who could throw some innings out of the pen. Problem is, we also need that guy to get opposing hitters out. Although Kyle---"I just got some pitches up in the zone and they strung together some hits"---Kendrick might be able to give us the former, it is very clear that he cannot provide the latter.

Eyre is only out for 15 days. I expect that Kendrick will only be up until the Phillies hit the road for Tampa & Toronto, then they'll bring up Mayberry Jr to do some DH work against lefties. Kendrick probably still has a shot in the majors as a starter, but not here. Anyone remember Gavin Floyd?

Another LH, should read…. Whatever value Kendrick had is out the window now. He may be done. About Koplove, the Phillies didn’t release him. He exercised an option on his Minor League contract that made him a free agent because he wasn’t called up to the Major League team by June 1st. He could have stay if he wanted. That’s another questionable move by the organization. The guy had a 1.30 ERA.

I got home a little late to see if the game was on and saw Kendrick pitching. My first reaction was, this must be a game from last year, but why? Then I remembered reading Murp’s blog early in the day about Eyre being possibly hurt. I couldn’t believe it. This is by far the most questionable move Amaro and Co have done so far after a nice offseason. They didn’t want to bring Mayberry because he needed playing time, and instead brought a third catcher who happens to be a weak LH hitter, yes another LF. But replacing a situational lefty with a right-hander, who has been mostly a starter and who has a shattered confidence to be a long man in the pen is even dumber. You saw the results. Why not Escalona or Majewiski, who had ML success before (he was part of the first USA Classic team)? About the options: If a player is optioned early in and then recalled and optioned again, the second assignment doesn’t burn another option. So they could have called Mayberry and Escalona again and send them back without burning another any option.

Who ever said to recall Kaplove has got to wake up and follow the team. He was released, as per his contract, on May 31 and is now in the Pirates organization. Hell of a problem calling him up. As for Sergio, I agree that it makes no sense. Once a player is called up during the year, you don't use up any more options by recalling him again during the same season so that isn't the reason. As for pulling KK in the 13th, do you think he'd have ben pitching in the 13th to begin with if we had another warm body who could have pitched? He was supposed to take over Park's job of inning eater to allow Park to become the 7th inning guy

Maybe MLB needs to have a rule like the NFL---where ALL plays inside 2 minutes and in overtime are automatically reviewed in the booth and they can call down to the field to reverse a call when appropriate. Otherwise we are at the mercy of the umpires, who can simply decline to review any play.

This is not a defense of Kendrick, because he blew it. However, this loss is not all on him. I mean, the Phils called him up and put him in the position to lose the game in the first place. Kendrick just held up his end and did what he does. There is a reason why he was sent down to AAA and kept there, right? They should have left him there. They didn't. He coughed one up. We lost.

When Kyle Kendrick is on his game he causes in field ground outs. Too bad his skipper LOST faith in him. As the skipper moved the infield in WITH ONE OUT and with a possible double play situation. Kyle did his job the batter hit the ball where Utley should have been. That would have stopped the scoring in the 13th inning. Sorry Kyle! You did your job! Your skipper goofed!

Well, it didn't take long to find out that KK is still the same stiff who hasn't recorded a meaningful out since this time last year. 2 innings, 3 runs, one loss.

Bad decision verified by bad performance. Kendrick has no value. Should send him back along with Taschner, recall Escalona and purchase contract of Tyler Walker. Got that Rubie ??

Still need(hot stove time 'til now): right handed pitch hitter/maybe someone with speed, 2 relief pitchers, 2 starters(the young arms may help-we still need an established starter.

Instead of Kendrick I thought they would bring up Mike Koplove who has a 1.08 ERA in 23 games of relief at Lehigh Valley. He also has major league experience.

He reminds me of one of those phillies pitchers from that dark days of the franchise where the gm or manager would always say "he'll take the ball every fifth day", or the classic "he'll eat innings for us". But does he have talent...... uh....no,,

Im sorry. I wish the best for kendrick as a phillies fan, but he went thru the league once or twice then got consistently plastered. I dont have much hope. When you see a raw Bastardo or even a Happ, you can seee the talent that might someday blossom. with Kendrick, does anyone see anything above mediocrity?? I was happy he did so well but I cant point to any time that he looked any more than just above mediocre at best.

I went to a Lehigh Valley game last month and watched Kendrick get lit up by the Braves' AAA squad. He kept nibbling the whole game and was gone after 5. Why would you want this guy on the big league squad - even for mop up duty. They could always sign Tomas Perez and let him try pitching, he really can't be much worse.

My guess is that they don't want to burn another option on Escalona this early in the season. I don't know if he has three or four to start with.

For all of you Taschner bashers out there, his splits on the last 10 games are excellent going back to April 29: 13.1 IP, 13 hits, 8K, 9BB,4 ER, ERA 2.75. Not too shabby. He had a rough start to the season, but that's behind him according to the numbers.

What about Escalona? That would seem to make more sense than Kendrick... but like others have said, he will be only in for mop-up duty.

Nice reward for a 21 game winner over not even two full seasons in the majors. My problem is with Taschner now expected to come in out of the pen in a key situations and his inability so far to throw stikes to and get out lefthanded hitters.

Trade deadline is July 31. Kendrick is no rookie. He's had some real good days and some bad days under fire. It's not about him being a potential September call-up. He's already earned that dubious honor. It's about whether or not he has developed a good enough off-speed pitch to compliment his cut fastball and sinker. We shall see.

The Phils are just doing what any good team with options/talent in the minors will do. Does 11:59PM Aug 31st mean anything to any of you people? For those of you who know what I'm talking about wouldn't it make sense to know who is the best personel to bring up prior to that deadline? Yeah they need help but it goes farther than that, they need to get a good look at some of the talent, under fire, to see who's going to hold up and with an opening in the 25 man roster this the time to do it. There is a trading deadline coming up the end of June which could also account for alot of these moves. Also when you bring up minor league talent, even for one game, it gives them a taste of what their dream is and should inspire them to do better. The Phils haven't been in this situation since the early 1980s. Lets hope they learned from their mistakes of those days.

he won a lot of those games thanks to the phillies offense not because of his pitching...he sucked last year..i hope this is just to showcase him hope he does good and then get rid of him otherwise as some have already said why not just bring escalona up to replace eyre..a lefty for a lefty

Maybe they're showcasing Kendrick as part of a potential deal for Brad Penny? He'd be a throw-in for us, and I'm sure the Sox would want a lot more in any deal, but this way they have someone they can stick down in AAA, but still be able to tell their fan base the guy's got potential in case they ever need a (seventh or eighth) starter.

Kendrick won 21 games the last two years. That's alot more than most of the pitchers on current MLB rosters. Don't be too quick to write him off. Jamie Moyer took some bad beatings as a youngster. I was at one of them. Look where's he's at now. There's no radar gun to measure heart or desire. It's up to Kendrick. I'm happy for the kid.

First the Bako move and now this? I must admit that I don't understand all the financial aspects of these moves, but Escalona (a quality lefty reliever) seems like a much better choice than a mediocre-at-best righty starter. I guess we'll have to wait and see -- hopefully there is some good reason for this that I just don't understand.

Problem is they passed over Kendrick already 4 times. Talking about a guy who was considered a front runner for the starting job this year. He also went 10-4 as a rookie and had 11 wins last year. Who knows how he's been throwing in AAA and developing his changeup.

I agree with those feeling that the Kendrick choice is a bit confusing. Why replace a lefty reliever with a righty starter? I am not sure what is "down on the farm" but another lefty reliever seems a more appropriate choice. GO PHILS!

In a 21 start span between 4/16/08 to 8/06/08. Kyle Kendrick at the age of 23 had a 9-4 record with a 4.45 ERA. The Phillies as a team were 15-6 in those 21 starts. He also had a solid 2007.

I can't believe that there isn't a pitcher in their farm system or on a local little league team that they can bring up instead of Kendrick. When is this organization going to accept the obvious fact that Kyle Kendrick is not a major league pitcher and never will be? I can only conclude that he has dirty pictures of some high-ranking Phillie's officials. I can only pray that they don't have to use him over the next 15 days unless they're in a 20 run blow-out.
