Escalona sent down
Andy Martino
A couple of quick hits about the game, which the Phils won 10-5. The only blemish was Chan Ho Park’s four-run seventh. For a full game story, check the website.
--The Phillies optioned Sergio Escalona to triple-A, making room for J.C. Romero. This came after Manuel said pre-game that he expected to keep 13 pitchers for a while. Jack Taschner, you’re still a big leaguer.
--In case you fell asleep, Antonio Bastardo was very good. Everyone thought his fastball was low-nineties, including Manuel. But he came out throwing gas, getting it up to 95 in the first inning.
--Fun fact: Raul Ibanez hit his 200th home run on his 37th birthday. The pitcher who allowed the shot, Josh Geer, also was celebrating a birthday, at least until he faced Ibanez. It was Geer’s 26th.
--Two fun quotes. From a grinning Manuel on Bastardo: “(Bastardo’s) adrenaline was going. He was on a rush and you couldn’t have slowed him down if you had to. But he did one thing real good: He was aggressive and he wasn’t afraid to throw the ball.”
--Ibanez on his big day: “When you hit 37, they all tend to feel the same,” Ibanez said, adding that he did not remember if he had homered before on a birthday. “I don’t know,” he said, shaking his head. “So many games.”

Love his name. Love his fastball. Maybe we've got our fifth starter. CenterCityPhan
I'm a Bastardo too. i promise to be nicest
ESPN appers to be afraid to mention Bastardo's name on the air! Dennis O.
ESPN appears to be afraid to mention Bastardo's name on the air! Dennis O.- They shouldn't part with a top prospect to get a starter. We've got a chance to control the division for the next decade.
Though it is "only" June 3. It is pertinent to point out that at 30-20, the Fightins own the second best record in all of baseball behind the Dodgers. It's fair to say the team has put their annual slow start behind them, the hitting has become consistent, and the pitching staff is getting their feet beneath them despite obvious challeneges. This organization has a lot to be proud of over the past couple of seasons and may have its best baseball in front of it yet. Keep it up fellas. Preserve Jon
@Dan, I agree. While it is certainly still early, I haven't seen anything that suggests this team isn't ready to seriously compete for the championship again. For all the flak the Phils' farm system gets, they have a stable of great-looking pitching prospects. No way I mortgage the future when the major league starters are coming around nicely, the defense is superb, the lineup is virtually unstoppable, and the club is in first place. telly
I'm not quite ready to make room on a shelf for the Bastardo's Cy Young yet, but he's earned a second start. Only thinkg I didn't like about his game was it was all fastball, fastball and fastball. The only other pitch he threw was a faste-ball. He better have a curve or breaking ball or slider to go with the heat or he's going to get lit up soon. fan_in_jerusalem
could we please send Chan Ho Tank down instead? Or maybe just leave him at the airport on the way home. hayes9
Hayes, every team needs a mop up guy. It's a shame to waste a real pitcher for games where we're up by 8 or down by 8. He fits the bill perfectly. fan_in_jerusalem

OK, but should the mop-up guy put us in jeopardy every time he steps on the mound? hayes9
Chan Ho probably has no takers based on performance and contract. Antonio will not have to worry about his name or checkbook for long....Go Phillies oldBird
Chan Ho probably has no takers based on performance and contract. Antonio will not have to worry about his name or checkbook for long....Go Phillies oldBird- I'm very impressedwith the kid's approach. Get the ball and throw it with a simple wind-up and delivery. Reminded me of Jim Kaat in that he didn't waste time between pitches. He patiently peered over his glove until the batter was ready. I liked the shots of Foghorn Leghorn Moyer giving hime some fatherly advice in the dugout. You could tell that Bastardo really didn't understand too much of it, seeins that he speaks little English according to McCarthy. RAS
