Early notes from workout day

POSTED: Monday, October 26, 2009, 1:05 PM

Couple of quick notes before I head down to the field for the workout.  More detailed stuff to come.

--Very little hard news this morning, and the rotation remains a mystery beyond Cliff Lee Wednesday.  Still, no one would be surprised to see Pedro Martinez starting Game 2 in da Bronx.  What would the rotation look like if you were to put it together?

--Sounds like J.A. Happ will remain in the bullpen through the World Series.

--Robin Roberts is at the Bank today, and he said there were four things in life he hated: Notre Dame, Michigan, the Yankees and Russia.

--I am eating a peanut butter sandwich.

Gotta run.  More in a few hours.

God Bless Robin Roberts. Couldn't agree more with the first three on his list!

I think it's crazy the way Happ is overlooked as a starter. He was the team's most reliable all season long. The baggage between Pedro and the Yankees is too heavy for Game 2. Rotation: Lee, Happ, Hamels, Blanton. Hamels is much better at home. Happ is much better on the road. You have to believe the right Hamels shows up. If not, maybe you swap Pedro for Blanton and use Blanton in long relief in Game 4. Keep Cole on a very short leash. You have to put 2008 aside and look at numbers. The numbers tell you Happ. Yankee splits are even vs LHP or RHP. I am afraid Pedro may have more moxie than true stuff at this point.

Of course, that will be good for LH pitchers. As for the rotation, Pedro gets game 2 after that performance in LA. Happ is the only leftie out of the bullpen not named Eyre, so that's where he's going to stay for the WS. It has nothing to do with him not being able to start, it's the fact that he's more valuable to us in the pen.

Andy, l hope you read this, and pass it on to Mr. Amaro... we had umpteen sellouts this year, truly a great year for the Phillies and the organization, here's my point.. Please tell Ruben Amaro, to raise ticket prices $2.00 each, take the extra money, and go get Roy Halladay, could you imagine a pitching staff of Lee, Halladay, Hamels, Happ and either Blanton, Moyer or Pedro, we could give up Blanton and Myers plus two prospects, and have the finest pitching staff for years to come.... with returns to the W.S....come on Ruben, make us happy Phillie fans for a very long time... its worth the 2 bucks.... please forward Andy, l've lost Ruben's email addy.

Happ is a rookie. He's done nothing in the post-season to show that he's ready to start in the World Series. He didn't look good against Colorado and he's struggled out of the bullpen. Pedro, meanwhile, has pitched in a lot of big playoff games, has already won a World Series and dominated the Dodgers in his lone start. Plus, Jeter and A-Rod are RH hitters and Tex is a switch hitter so there's less need for a LH starter when none of the Yankees top 3 hitters are lefties. Then, you've got the lefty shortage in the pen with JC out. It all adds up to Happ in the pen.

Put Roberts in pen, invest in peanut butter futures and start Pedro in game 2.

Joe/Haddonfield, it is not that Happ is overlooked as a starter. It is much as danlands said. Happ is the only one of the four SPs who has proven BP ability. I disagree with danlands only slightly with his comment "he's more valuable" in the BP. He's equally valuable either as a SP or RP; but the TEAM is better with Happ in the bullpen than with any of the other SPs (maybe that's what dan really meant to say).

Happ has more mental toughness than Hamels, rookie or not. With Chan Ho back, the long man role can be played by him quite well. Who on the the Yankees are you looking to neutralize with a second lefty? Eyre has been very good. That's enough. I think it's crazy to hold out Happ because you might use him. Look at the splits. The Yankees are very balanced vs LHP and RHP. It's the trap of baseball tradition. It's like no swinging at the first pitch but Jimmy and Feliz are both hit over .370 for their careers on the first pitch. But they get crucified for swinging first pitch. Look at the splits, look at the numbers and Happ is your man for game 2.
