Looked like the writing was on the wall for Durbin. I got the feeling yesterday was his last chance. Based on his work so far, Walker deserves to be here. Carpenter should be a solid replacement for J.C. AND they need another long man to alternate with Park. Since Escalona is the obvious left-handed backup to J.C., I wonder if this is Carpenter's audition for a starting role. I've heard they've got some question marks at the 5 and 4 positions...wink wink.

Why wasn't Escalona called up? We need to replace JC with another lefty in the pen. There are two logic explanations, either he is hurt or he hasn't spend 10 days in the minors since he was last optioned.

How nice it must be for Martino that all he needs to do is cut-and-paste from Murphy's blog.

Dont worry Eyre can handle the lefty role (GULP)

Hey jman, maybe the Phillies sent the same press release to all reporters. Nice cheap shot, though. Is there any way we can limit this blog to intelligent comments? This could be a long night if it rains. Doubt they'll cancel, since Padres flew in just for makeup.

Carpenter a solid replacement for Romero? HUH??? You're replacing one of the top lefty set-up men in the game with a minor league starting pitcher. That's not a replacement of any kind. Escalona is not the obvious left-handed backup to Romero. It's a guy named Eyre who has a 1.77 ERA this season. Carpenter auditioning for a starting role??? He's not going to replace Lopez and Martinez is already being given a crack at Lopez's spot in a few weeks. More than likely, they just wanted someone who could throw 2-3 innings so the bullpen doesn't get too taxed here.

Two in one day - that's a killer. Three of our starters need to step up their innings right now...(hard to complain about Happ and Blanton). Carpenter's been very solid in AAA. Hope this doesn't mess him up.
