Drabek or Buchholz: Who would the Jays rather have?
Andy Martino
I called Ben Badler, an editor at Baseball
First off, Gordon Edes of Yahoo, a terrific reporter, said today that the Red Sox have included Clay Buchholz in an offer to obtain Halladay. I asked Badler who he’d rather have between the two prospects. He said:
“I think it depends on who you talk to, but I’d prefer to have Buchholz. I see a more advanced repertoire, and he’s ever had the type of major arm surgery that Drabek has. You never know how that could catch up with him.”
Here was his take on some other guys. BA gets its information from scouts, managers, farm directors and coaches across the minor leagues. They updates their files constantly.
Carlos Carrasco: : "Some of Carrasco’s numbers are very good. He strikes out a batter per inning, he has walked about three per nine innings. He’s only 22 years old. He’s been very hittable this year, but that could just be luck. He has a low-90s fastball, and above-average change-up and a curveball that gets mixed reviews but shows flashes. This year has been a little bit disappointing for him.”
Lou Marson: “It is tough to know what to make of Marson. You always like to see players who control the strike zone like he does, but his power is limited. If Marson can develop power, that will determine his future. But even moderate power as a catcher would make him valuable. I wouldn’t predict above-average power for him. If he develops some power—and it’s hard at this point to say if he will—he will be an average player.”
Jason Donald: “It’s fair to say he’s been one of the most disappointing prospects in baseball this season. It seems to have fallen apart for Donald, and all of a sudden he’s a 24-year-old in Triple-A. His value has plunged this year.”
It should be noted, of course, that Donald and Marson have dealt with injuries this season. Also, I am aware that a report knocked down Edes' report. I don't know the specifics of this particular story, but I do know that Edes is rarely wrong.

Get Halladay for Drabek, Brown, Carrasco, and two "A" level minor players (like we got for Abreu). Drabek had Tommy John surgery, which could be a problem down the road for him and Carrasco has location problems- On 7/7, he walked 4 straight batters, but gave up 3 runs. STM1968
I think the Phillies need a closer more than they need a starter. Jeff Dowder
Master Dreamz - its not Happ and Drabek which is given Rube pause... its Brown and Drabek. Both these guys are rated by Baseball America as the top 25 prospects in all of baseball. Look at all of the prior trading deadline deals and no team has included its two best prospects in the same deal for 1 player. I don't blame Ruben here - I'd tell Toronto they can have Drabek or Brown, but not both. dankil13
Will somebody please make a trade to upgrade our pitching staff!!! Tired of watching the phils sit on their hands. floridajohn
The history of the Phillies is that they don't do deals like this. They don't acquire big names in trades. They only dumped Schilling and Rolen because they had to, and ended up with nothing to show for it -- especially after they let Polanco go. This is a franchise that moves slowly, ponders forever, and, in the end, takes a pass. That is what they are going to do here. George Jacobs
Just say no, Ruben. Let the Jays rip off some other team. Better yet, let them keep Halladay and see where they finish next year if they love him so much. flyerdup

It turns out that the Phils probably gave up a lot more than they needed to do to land Jim Thome as a free agent. Right now it appears that they are the only real player in this game. Think Halladay would still be around if some other team was serious. Right now Amaro is just dickering price, which a good GM should do. Why give away your #3 pitcher and your top two or three prospectgs if you don't have to. If Amaro trades away the farm where will the Phills be in a couple of years if Halladay doesn't extend, Howard goes to the Yankees for A-Rod $$$, Moyer and Ibanez are retired? Who will they have to bring up or trade. Remember Bill Giles and how the farm didn't produce anything under him for 20 years. mike l
It breaks down like this, the Jays want Happ and Drabek. The Phils will not trade both of them. I agree with that stance. The ball really is in the Jays court -- as long as the Phils hold their stance. Because, it comes down to whether the Jays will accept 4 players (Happ or Drabek, and 3 other of the names thrown around) or the 3 players they seem to be holding out for. I will say this says something about Halladay, not pushing the trade, not taking it to the press, etc. A clear professional. Master Dreamz

Amaro is starting to remind me of a guy who walks into a Ferrari dealership with his piggy bank. What did he think the Jays would want for Halladay? You are not going to land the best pitcher in baseball and not give up a ton. A Stanford guy should know better. ericg610

hegzatsc.....everyone knows what the opinion of those guys are. It's those mid-level prospects that are having trouble finding consistent value. Knapp, brown, taylor...right NOW...are high on everyone's list. But wait till next year, it will be different. scootch
It looks like andy wants phillies to make a trade just like the mets did for santana,And then look at them the worst minor leag team and they also suck in the mayors. Ruben is not goig to give up all their talent for that guy period. WE ARE THE WORLD CHAMPS. Phillies08
Hmmmm, who would the Jays rather have? Drabek or Bucholz? Hmmmm. Tough decision, huh, Jays? Well, maybe I'll make the decision easier for you: YOU'LL GET NOTHING AND LIKE IT!!! Seriously, they aren't getting either. They can posture and huff and puff all they want. They aren't getting blown away with a deal. Just like the Phillies didn't get blown away when they traded Schilling 9 years ago. Either they accept a reasonable offer, or they get nothing. phink
