Domonic Brown returns; Cody Asche sits

NEW YORK — One young Phillies position player returned to Ryne Sandberg's lineup Thursday while another sat.

Domonic Brown started in left field and batted cleanup. It was his first action since last Saturday's 18-inning marathon. He left that game with soreness in his right Achilles tendon. Brown needs three more homers to reach 30 for the season, which qualifies as some drama for the final 29 games.

As expected, third baseman Cody Asche was not in the lineup after suffering a mild right hamstring strain in Wednesday's win. Sandberg said the injury is not serious, and Asche could be available to pinch-hit.

The lineup:

1. Michael Young 5
2. Kevin Frandsen 3
3. Chase Utley 4
4. Domonic Brown 7
5. Carlos Ruiz 2
6. Darin Ruf 9
7. John Mayberry Jr. 8
8. John McDonald 6
9. Ethan Martin 1
