Dobbs designated as Rollins returns

POSTED: Tuesday, June 22, 2010, 2:59 PM

Was designating Greg Dobbs the best move?
Yes.
No, it should have been Juan Castro.
No, it should have been Wilson Valdez.

The Phillies have activated shortstop Jimmy Rollins from the disabled list and instead of getting rid of either Wilson Valdez or Juan Castro, both of whom have filled in well for Rollins, the team opted to cut ties with Greg Dobbs.

Dobbs was designated for assignment. In 66 at-bats this season, he was batting .152. As a pinch-hitter, the role Dobbs thrived in during the 2008 championship season, he was just 1 for 25.

The Phillies also placed catcher Carlos Ruiz (concussion) on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 19. They added lefthander Mike Zagurski from triple-A Lehigh Valley to take Ruiz's spot, meaning the Phils are back to 12 pitchers.

Righthander Scott Mathieson cleared optional waivers and was optioned to triple A.

The Phillies have 10 days to release, trade or place Dobbs on waivers with the hopes of sending him to the minors. But Dobbs can reject any minor-league assignment and I'd find it highly unlikely he goes to triple-A.

Much, much more to come...

Someday, people will walk down the street and say, "There goes Greg Dobbs, nowhere near the best there ever was in the game.'" We owe him a lot for 2008, though, so best of luck in your next stop Dobbsie.

Sorry to see him go after what he did in 08, but thank god. He was pretty terrible this year and last.

lol eam30717, hopefully they follow this up by cutting Ben Francisco and calling up Mayberry Jr. for the rest of the season.

Most of us have been calling for this for some time. RAJ needs to shake some things up as much as possible and Dobbs was an easy target. That said, Dobbs deserves much respect for 2008. Even with subpar 2009 and 2010, he did his job. Here's hoping he latches on somewhere else and gets to cash a couple more checks before hanging them up.

Coming out of spring training, Dobbs was lining up the ball on the bat in a way that made me confident he was in for a big season, determined to show that he was still the top left hand bat off the bench. He lost his mojo and proved me wrong. He will be picked up by Kansas City or Pittsburgh, either of which will give him more at bats and he will perform better, in fact well enough for the idiots in some village to say we never should have let him go.

I really hope J-Roll's calf is up for this, and it's not another tease like last time. He's so vital to this team, I think it would be a huge mental letdown, which this squad ill-afford any more of after that game 2 Twins 9th inning disaster.

Francisco is more likely to start in right field next year than he is to get "cut" this year. What kind of loser team cuts a 28-year-old player with speed, pop and defensive skills just because he's struggled in very limited duty for the first few months of the season? And just to be clear, sillibilli, the John Mayberry you want to replace him with is the same one who hit .203 for the Phils last year and struck out in nearly half of his at bats? The one who is hitting .266 in triple A this year with fewer homers and a lower OPS than journeyman Andy Tracy? Brilliant strategy!

Keeping both Valdez and Castro tells me that they are still concerned about JROLL......it wasn't about Dobbs!

Excellent choice by RAJ. Greg Dobbs has been an anchor around this team for a very long time. He certainly earned praise for his terrific 2008 campaign but a total lack of offense the past two years and subpar glove work made this a long overdue decision by the front office.
