Dobbs clears waivers, will accept minor-league assignment

UPDATE (4:57 p.m.): Dobbs will report to Lehigh Valley on Friday.

Greg Dobbs, designated for assignment by the Phillies on Tuesday, has cleared waivers and will accept a minor-league assignment to triple-A Lehigh Valley, his agent said Wednesday.

It is unknown when Dobbs will report to Lehigh Valley.

"He will play every day (or most) in triple A in order to get his swing back to where it needs to be," his agent, Dan Horwits, said in an e-mail.

Dobbs, who will turn 32 on July 2, hasn't played in the minor leagues since 2006, when he was with triple-A Tacoma in Seattle's organization.

In 2010, Dobbs is hitting .152 (10 for 66) with the Phillies. As a pinch hitter, the role he thrived in during the 2008 championship season, he is 1 for 25.

The Phillies brass had expressed hope Dobbs would remain in the organization. They got their wish.

Good for him to accept assignment. Go down and get rid of the hitched unpercut homerun swing, concentrate on keeping eye on ball like Utley and he could be back up with Phils being better then even 08 season.

So much for sending a message to the complacent players. He's still in the organization and will most likely be back before too long. I guess it doesn't matter how awful you are at your job, you're still good enough to be a part of the team! What kind of message is that? Could anybody else in any other line of work get away with being the worst person in their field and not get fired? Ridiculous.

What a shocker, nobody wants a pinch hitter that can't hit. He'll be back in less than a week when Rollins stays healthy and either Valdez or Castro is released

I'm glad a good guy who helped us in 2008 will have a chance to find out if playing every day will make a difference and salvage his carreer.

If the guy can find his swing, then it'd be nice to have him back as opposed to carrying Castro or Valdez as the extra guy. He has more pop than either of them, and when he's on, he can hit more line drives than Valdez and hence stay out of DPs more. Valdez is a DP machine.

Rich Dubee and Dubee Baez should be the next two to go...

probably the best thing that can happen, Dobbs will play everyday, and thus have the at bats to be a productive pinch hitter down the stretch
