The Phillies targeted Chicago's Mark DeRosa as a potential replacement for the injured Chase Utley and as a utility outfielder. (Jerry Lai/AP file photo)

Inquirer staff writer Jim Salisbury reports:

The trade that would have brought Chicago Cubs infielder/outfielder Mark DeRosa to the Phillies appears dead.

DeRosa would have gone to the Phils in a three-way deal that also involved the San Diego Padres. The Cubs were trying to get Padres pitcher Jake Peavy and hoped to acquire prospects from the Phillies in order to facilitate the deal.

This morning, however, Cubs GM Jim Hendry told Padres GM Kevin Towers that he wasn't going to do the deal.

The Phillies had envisioned DeRosa providing insurance at second base for Chase Utley, who is recovering from hip surgery. He would also have played leftfield.

These type of glitches happen often in complex trade talks. You never know when things could be rekindled.

The Phillies will continue looking for a leftfielder, maybe free agent Raul Ibanez or Minnesota's Delmon Young.

Also, the Phils selected righthanded-pitcher Robert Mosebach from the Angels in the Rule 5 draft. The Phils lost no players in the major league phase of the draft.

The Phils are working on hammering out a deal with pitcher Chan Ho Park, who would work in relief.

UPDATE: In the minor league phase of the Rule V draft, the Phillies selected second baseman Kyle Haines from the San Francisco Giants and outfielder Javis Diaz from the San Diego Padres.

Haines, 26, spent last season with double-A Connecticut, where he hit .261 (91-348) with 43 RBI in 105 games. A 31st-round selection of the Giants in 2004, Haines is hitting .270 (291-1078) with five home runs and 120 RBI in 336 career games.

Diaz, 24, combined to hit .253 (95-376) with four home runs, 37 RBI and 28 stolen bases in 107 games between single-A Lake Elsinore and triple-A Portland. Signed as an amateur free agent by the Padres on August 7, 2002, Diaz is hitting .277 (477-1724) with 16 home runs, 155 RBI and 151 stolen bases in 479 career games.

Three players in the Phillies’ minor league system were selected by other teams in the triple-A phase of the draft, catcher Richard Suomi by Kansas City and righthanders Brett Harker and Ronald Hill, both by Florida.

Zo, what do we know about this Robert Mosebach kid? Do you think he has potential to be on the 25-man roster all year? Starter or Bullpen?

maybe they should look at getting Peavy and Jermaine Dye. Dye is available via trade.

Although I kind of liked the DeRosa deal, I think the Phils have to worry less about about a fill-in for Chase, and more about left field. I can't imagine Chase missing more than a month of the regular season. Why pay extra money for four weeks work. Bruntlett filled in nicely for J.Roll last season, and could do the same for Chase.

I like the fact that they took him from California, who is loaded with Major League pitching. Hopefully, he has some potential.

He looks like he has nothing....too many baserunners and hits per innings pitched....unless Dubee can find a way to stop the bleeding baserunners every inning, this guy will be back with the Angels by the end of ST.......can you say Travis Blackley?????

What yall need to know is that Utley may forever have hip problems, this surgery may have only minimal effects at restoring his "game"....having a DeRosa would be huge for this team and this bench....maybe they can find a way to still get him....

He was a starter at AA last year. His WHIP was pretty high...almost 1.6. He pitched 177 innings in 29 starts and had an ERA over 4.5. "Innings eater" was the first thing I saw when I googled him, sounds about right - 6.1 innings per start. No way he makes the rotation...he pitched in relief in AZ Fall league - also not great. Maybe they're hoping his old club won't take him back for $25k or whatever the number is, and they can hold onto him to see if he continues to progress. He's only 24, so there's time if they think he's got potential.

Norma - Bruntlett does not make up for the lack of offense if Utley is out for a period of time. Its a big hole to fil.. Prego614 - Peavey and Dye have no trade clauses and the Phillies are not on their list of teams. Why doesn't anyone get this?

Mark: We got it the first time (LMFAO). I'm convinced that Chase is back by end of May and Donald fills in up 'till then. As for LF, I'd rather go into the season with what we got, as bleak as that sounds, then make a deal just to make a deal. No one mentioned so far strikes me as the answer to our needs. This one is a madman,. that one is sick, this one has another problem, etc. Hopefuly once the Manny situation is settled and other teams start settling their rosters and Arbitration cases are settled we can pick up someone cheap as teams need to dump salaries.

Let's see we get DeRosa and the Cubs get Peavy and we give up Happ. Thankfully this trade is dead.

Why don't they sign Tadahito Iguchi to a one year deal? He filled in well for Utley 2 years ago? I'm sure he wouldn't be expensive.

The Peavy/Dye no-trade clause "non-comprehension" thing is bugging me too...now, why those two guys wouldn't want to come to the WS Champs is beyond me. Maybe Dye thinks he'll be relegated to fourth class lineup citizen behind Howard, Utley, and Rollins. Peavy makes little sense, aside from the dimensions of the park. Also, Peavey makes a ton of money and is loked in for like 4 more years, so I doubt the Phils will even be in contention.

They plan to use him as a RP, and called him a 'power arm' on Phillies.com. However he only had 88 k's in 177 innings, so that power must be awfully good at hitting bats. However I am all about taking a shot and seeing what happens. Remember that Fabio Castro got us the game winning 2-run homerun in game 4 of the NLCS. I only wish we had kept Jim Ed Warden from last year.

So far the Phillies look like they are completely out of the mix on all the big free agents on the market. I don't expect that they will start competing with NY and Boston anytime soon. Maybe we can swindle Ed Wade into giving up Roy Oswalt for Shane Victorino and a player to be named later.

If, as Mark worries, it proves true that Utley forever has hip problems, I'd argue for keeping Donald and hoping he's major-league ready sooner than later. Doesn't sound like the Cubs want to part with DeRosa.

phillygreg, I did a little research. Apparently you could pin that Game 4 win on Jim Thome. How? Thome -> Rowand -> Daniel Haigwood -> Fabio Castro -> Matt Stairs. Ta Da!! I can't believe how bored I am right now.

If Utley's health never improves beyond how he felt this past year, I would still take him as my 2B, he still had a good year even with a hip problem.

Hey Jeff, I won the spelling bee in fifth grade...then in sixth grade I got sick of always being seen as "the smart kid", so I tanked it. Anyway, the Fabio Castro point is a good one, except we actually had to carry him in the pen all year. I kept thinking that was a waste of a spot, but ol' "a-- pounder" turned out to be well worth it.

Kevin Bacon would actually be really easy to connect to game 4. Kevin Bacon-->Any one of the hundreds of actors/acresses in attendance-->Game 4. Basically my point is that it is worth it taking a shot on a guy since it costs nothing (in baseball money) and could lead to something big.

GHOSTPHAYCE: the reason the Phils aren't in teh huge FA signings is we don't need them. unlike NY (both teams) Cubs, Boston etc, we won the WS. We need to improve specif areas, not the entire team. We don't want to shake things up, but mold the edges. Relax. We'll enter the season with everything we need. Wait to see what happens as arbitration settles adn teams offload salaries to meet payrolls

I'm actaully fine with it. There's no way I would have paid Sabathia $161M and I don't think D. Lowe is worth a 4yr/$66M deal. Originally there were some rumors about us getting Burnett or Lowe, but that is looking far fetched now. I think we should try and swindle Houston again though, that worked out well for us last year.

Well trade clauses can be waived. Having Peavy makes this a very good rotation. I would rather have Peavy than Dye though because look what pitching did for us last year. Peavy makes a lot of money but they could afford it. Hamels and Howard will continually go into arbitration every year. You can probably get a left fielder during the regular season, or bring up a prospect. Our bullpen is fine and still better than the Mets and our lineup is still better. But its likely they will get a permanent replace for LF during the season.

Prego614 - you continue to ignore the fact that Peavey and Dye have listed teams in which they are willing to waive the no trade for, and the Phillies aren't one of them!!! Get over it.

Prego614: you are right, trade clauses can be waived, by the player only and in this case he isn't willing to play here so do us all a favor and move on.. As for LF, we need one before opening day. Can't have the play with only 8 guys you know. If we had a prospect ready to play OF do you think we'd be going after people like DeRosa etc? as they say, the cuboard is bare

Gary...I totally agree with you about Bruntlett's lack of offense in replacing Chase. But this team always picks each other up. As long as Chase isn't out more than a month, we'll be OK. And his rehab is going well, so that's a good sign. "Video Dan" Stephenson was on TV today, hawking "The Perfect Season" DVD, and said that Chase was at the ballpark yesterday. He stopped in Dan's office "to look at some stuff". I'm assuming play video. What a guy!!! LOL! By the way, "The Perfect Season" sounds great. LOTS of extras, besides highlights. Guess I'll have to add it to my collection! Anyone going to the tree lighting on Saturday? Can't wait to see the WS trophy up-close-and-personal!

"He filled in well for Utley 2 years ago?"...Yeah, or why don't the Eagles hop in their magic DeLorean and go get Tommy Herr. He filled in will at 2B for a few years....Iguchi got RELEASED last year because he stunk. He did a great job for the Phillies two years ago, but is washed up...Another WIPtard who clings loyally to players even when they are washed up. You're probably the same dope cheering when the Eagles signed Richard Dent years ago.

the reason Park isn't being discussed is he's not really going to make a difference. He's going to be the mop up guy or the 6th inning guy to carry us until we go to madson and Lights out. More important is LF and our SP (please don't say Park will start..that's just stupid thinking)

Rule 5: you can select anyone not on another team's 40 man roster for $50K You must keep him on your 25 man roster all year, or offer him back to the team for $25K Remember, the Flyin' Hawaiian was a Rule V from LA, whom we offered back, but they refused. Bet they regret that now!

Since when do you make major trades based on the injury report? How ridiculous is this going to get? The Phils have enough talent in their system to handle the loss of Utley, Feliz, and the missing corner outfielder. There's no doubt that DeRosa is a fine player but that deal does nothing but help the Cubs and little for anyone else. Feliz will be back the end of April and Utley the end of May. The Phils will keep a very close eye on Chase because of the investment he represents but if anyone thinks he isn't going to get the finest of care their nuts. In the interim all that we really need is for Howard to show up and hit like he did three years ago. End of problem. Like I said before this coming season is going to sink or swim time for Ryan. Lets hope he shows what a great slugger can do.

PITCHING - and anybody hitting - is what is going to save or sink us during the time Utley and Feliz are out. Ryan doesn't HAVE to be our savior all season. Just a little more consistent please.

Why sign Iguchi when he only plays 2b? Utley may only be out a month, what the Phillies will be looking for is a Wigginton type player that can play the OF as well as 2B and 3b.
