The Phillies targeted Chicago's Mark DeRosa as a potential replacement for the injured Chase Utley and as a utility outfielder. (Jerry Lai/AP file photo)

Inquirer staff writer Jim Salisbury reports:

The trade that would have brought Chicago Cubs infielder/outfielder Mark DeRosa to the Phillies appears dead.

DeRosa would have gone to the Phils in a three-way deal that also involved the San Diego Padres. The Cubs were trying to get Padres pitcher Jake Peavy and hoped to acquire prospects from the Phillies in order to facilitate the deal.

This morning, however, Cubs GM Jim Hendry told Padres GM Kevin Towers that he wasn't going to do the deal.

The Phillies had envisioned DeRosa providing insurance at second base for Chase Utley, who is recovering from hip surgery. He would also have played leftfield.

These type of glitches happen often in complex trade talks. You never know when things could be rekindled.

The Phillies will continue looking for a leftfielder, maybe free agent Raul Ibanez or Minnesota's Delmon Young.

Also, the Phils selected righthanded-pitcher Robert Mosebach from the Angels in the Rule 5 draft. The Phils lost no players in the major league phase of the draft.

The Phils are working on hammering out a deal with pitcher Chan Ho Park, who would work in relief.

UPDATE: In the minor league phase of the Rule V draft, the Phillies selected second baseman Kyle Haines from the San Francisco Giants and outfielder Javis Diaz from the San Diego Padres.

Haines, 26, spent last season with double-A Connecticut, where he hit .261 (91-348) with 43 RBI in 105 games. A 31st-round selection of the Giants in 2004, Haines is hitting .270 (291-1078) with five home runs and 120 RBI in 336 career games.

Diaz, 24, combined to hit .253 (95-376) with four home runs, 37 RBI and 28 stolen bases in 107 games between single-A Lake Elsinore and triple-A Portland. Signed as an amateur free agent by the Padres on August 7, 2002, Diaz is hitting .277 (477-1724) with 16 home runs, 155 RBI and 151 stolen bases in 479 career games.

Three players in the Phillies’ minor league system were selected by other teams in the triple-A phase of the draft, catcher Richard Suomi by Kansas City and righthanders Brett Harker and Ronald Hill, both by Florida.

Zo, what do we know about this Robert Mosebach kid? Do you think he has potential to be on the 25-man roster all year? Starter or Bullpen?

maybe they should look at getting Peavy and Jermaine Dye. Dye is available via trade.

Although I kind of liked the DeRosa deal, I think the Phils have to worry less about about a fill-in for Chase, and more about left field. I can't imagine Chase missing more than a month of the regular season. Why pay extra money for four weeks work. Bruntlett filled in nicely for J.Roll last season, and could do the same for Chase.

I like the fact that they took him from California, who is loaded with Major League pitching. Hopefully, he has some potential.

He looks like he has nothing....too many baserunners and hits per innings pitched....unless Dubee can find a way to stop the bleeding baserunners every inning, this guy will be back with the Angels by the end of ST.......can you say Travis Blackley?????

Sometimes the best deal is the one you didn't make.

What yall need to know is that Utley may forever have hip problems, this surgery may have only minimal effects at restoring his "game"....having a DeRosa would be huge for this team and this bench....maybe they can find a way to still get him....

B in DC
He was a starter at AA last year. His WHIP was pretty high...almost 1.6. He pitched 177 innings in 29 starts and had an ERA over 4.5. "Innings eater" was the first thing I saw when I googled him, sounds about right - 6.1 innings per start. No way he makes the rotation...he pitched in relief in AZ Fall league - also not great. Maybe they're hoping his old club won't take him back for $25k or whatever the number is, and they can hold onto him to see if he continues to progress. He's only 24, so there's time if they think he's got potential.

Norma - Bruntlett does not make up for the lack of offense if Utley is out for a period of time. Its a big hole to fil.. Prego614 - Peavey and Dye have no trade clauses and the Phillies are not on their list of teams. Why doesn't anyone get this?

Mark: We got it the first time (LMFAO). I'm convinced that Chase is back by end of May and Donald fills in up 'till then. As for LF, I'd rather go into the season with what we got, as bleak as that sounds, then make a deal just to make a deal. No one mentioned so far strikes me as the answer to our needs. This one is a madman,. that one is sick, this one has another problem, etc. Hopefuly once the Manny situation is settled and other teams start settling their rosters and Arbitration cases are settled we can pick up someone cheap as teams need to dump salaries.

Let's see we get DeRosa and the Cubs get Peavy and we give up Happ. Thankfully this trade is dead.

Why don't they sign Tadahito Iguchi to a one year deal? He filled in well for Utley 2 years ago? I'm sure he wouldn't be expensive.
