Cleveland will scout at Reading, Lee deal remains a possibility

POSTED: Monday, July 27, 2009, 4:33 PM

Amid reports that the Phils-Jays talks are not going well—but keep in mind that the teams are mid-negotiation and their dynamic could very easily change soon—I’m hearing more about Phils-Indians. Baseball sources say that Cleveland will send scouts to watch the Reading Phillies tonight and for the next several nights, demonstrating that a Cliff Lee-to-Phils deal remains a possibility.

Kyle Drabek pitches tonight for Reading, though the Phillies do not believe that would have to part with their top pitching prospect to acquire Lee, the 2008 A.L. Cy Young Award winner. A baseball source also said that the Indians will “double up” their scouts to watch Vance Worley pitch on Thursday. Worley, a righthander, is 6-8 with a 5.68 ERA this year.

A person with direct knowledge of the Jays thinking told the Inquirer that the team is done scouting the Phillies, though it would not be out of the realm of possibility for them to take one more look at Drabek tonight.

In other news on the Plan B Watch, lefty Jarrod Washburn pitches for Seattle tomorrow night. While the Phillies have always favored the idea of acquiring Roy Halladay, Seattle’s Erik Bedard and Washburn have been on their radar, as well as Lee. With Bedard now on the disabled list—and one member of the Phillies staff recently questioned to me Bedard's desire to pitch deep into games, anyway—Lee and Washburn remain the two most logical non-Halladay options.

Plus, the loss of Bedard would seem to make the Mariners more likely to trade off players at the deadline. Ruben Amaro Jr. declined to say whether the Phils would send a scout to watch Washburn tomorrow.

Bottom line: They still want the horse. I'm not saying that a Lee or Washburn deal is likely, or even close.  I am saying that Phils continue to consider all possibilities.

drabek seems to be the key player here.perhaps a drabek, carrasco, brown, donald, marson trade might work

Sothe Jays have been reportedly arguing with the Phils over a deal that they supposedly don't care about losing? It don't matter if Halladay stays a Jay, but I guess it's the point of winning the debate right??

Any idea if the Phillies have talked to the Orioles about George Sherrill? I'm not convinced he is likely to be traded, but he would be a great addition to the bullpen.

Anybody reading between the lines, i.e., that the Phils may be actively looking at pitchers besides Halladay so the Jays start wondering whether they should continue talking to us? Of course, I'm not suggesting that we aren't interested in Lee or another arm, just that "posturing" is huge during negotiations, and Amaro is pretty shrewd since being under Gillick's tutelage. PK

solitery, you'd really rather give up Carrasco, Donald, AND Marson just to keep Happ out of the deal? If J.A. Happ were pitching for the Pirates right now, would you trade those three players to get him? Oh, and the Phillies need another left-handed starter in the rotation like I need a hole in the head.

Get Lee for 3 lesser choices. Younger and makes sense for a horse.

Sure Lee could pitch for us. I think their just trying to obtain as many lefties for the rotation so they don't have to face them. Ryan Howard' s ok with that.

Having watched since 1946 and having mostly FRUSTRATION for many years I hope the Phils go for the deal for Halladay. It is great to think that Drabek can be great but he already has had surgery. I would rather go for it now. I can't wait another 27 years. I'll be 100 and my heart can't take it!!GO NOW PHILLIES!!!

@reidbetweenthelines: I know u were kidding but, believe it or not, the Phils are 22-11 against lefties this year, tops in the majors. A huge reason for that is the addition of Ibanez who is tied for the team lead in HR's against lefties with 9, even after being on the DL.

I don't like Drabek, Happ and Brown deal. Tell Jays they can have Drabek and Happ or Happ and Brown but not Brown and Drabek. Thus: Drabek or Brown (top pitching or top hitting prospect) + Happ (okay) + 2 of any of the other 2nd tier guys (Carrasco, Marson, Donald, Taylor etc.)

Please say no to Jarrod Washburn. He is LH flyball pitchers, he'll get eaten alive in Phila. He benefits from the dimensions and OF defense in Seattle. They ostensibly play 3 Centerfielders. I fear a Jason Donald for Jarrod Washburn trade.
