Cheer Day?
Some Phillies blogs are promoting a night of cheering at Citizens Bank Park.
Cheer Day?
Todd Zolecki
Good morning.
Today’s post is going to be short because, well, my flight from San Diego to Philadelphia leaves in less than 30 minutes and I don’t have much time. But I wanted to pass this along. It’s from We Should Be GMs: Campaign Cheer. They’re asking fans tomorrow night at Citizens Bank Park – in light of Jimmy Rollins’ comments last week – to cheer uncontrollably for the Phillies … no matter what.
I detect just a tinge of sarcasm here, but it is an interesting concept.

Cole Hamels finally picks up a win in last night's 2-1 victory over the Padres.

Every time Howard came up last night, Joe Morgan talked about how Howard said he has not been comfortable at the plate all year. I wonder how comfortable the Philies are while paying him $10 million this year. I also wonder how comfortable Howard will be when he looks to get even more money through arbitration this off season.......It's really something that we were able to win two games of the series while only scoring 6 runs (and 22 runs during the 7 game road trip). Lucky we were playing the Padres, who are one of only 4 teams that are averaging fewer runs per game than the Phils since June 13 (the Reds, Giants, and Nationals are the others). Again, the pitching has been fantastic....I don't know what the pitchers are looking for anyway. You only need 1 run to win a game, so Moyer must have been satisfied on Friday night and Hamels had to be ecstatic. I mean he got 200% more runs than Moyer did! bski
As Cher said to Nicolas Cage in "Moonstruck" as she slapped him...."SNAP OUT IT!!" I keep trying to be optimistic in the hopes that the Phils' offense will follow that advice and awake from this fog/coma/bad dream. Tick, tock...time is running out. KarenA
Wanted: Pitcher willing to pitch in hitter friendly park for team who scores 12 runs.......a serries. Please apply to Phillies. I don't think any big name free agents will be applying for this job... jeff gross
Still thinks this yeam needs a Larry Bowa, Dallas Green type manager to kick some as*. Could also use a Rowland, Rose, Bowa player to kick some as*. I can't believe that not one player has called a team meeting about their play and lack of drive. Very scary--don't they want to win>?? jeff gross
I am down for this Cheer Day... Nothing else has worked for us in the past. Maybe if they come home to a cheering bank that will wake them up. If not we can boo on Wednesday. Beef69

I'm going to be out of town on Cheer Day, but I'll be there to boo that two-face loser named Jimmy Rollins when it's Boo Day. GHOSTPHAYCE
I am trying so badly to be optimistic. I want to post here, and plead for everyone to turn out and cheer no matter what, and you know what? Had the Phillies stomped the west coast last week and held on to first, I would say to myself, "Jimmy is right. They're playing their hearts out, and I can help." But how can I help the Phillies they way they're playing now? How can I help when Milt Freaking Thompson has "no idea" what to do? My cheering them as they strike out in their sleep is going make it better? Frank Lloyd Wrong
I have no idea if it will make their hitting better, but perhaps it will make you feel better. At least you will be getting out all that fustration in a non violent method. Sure beats throwing beer cans at the TV jeff gross
Hey one day is not going to hurt us. What happens if Carlos came to the plate and got a standing O. It just might work. One game. We have to give it a shot. I really don't want to see this season go down the crapper. Beef69
we should try it out for one day if for no other reason then to shut rollins up. Here JRoll, you asked, we delivered, and in return what did we get--another 2 run 6 hit effort.... jeff gross- I think the problem with this team comes from the front office (they have not put a good working nucleus together) and the manager (who does not know how to deal with what he has). I am not a big believer in team chemistry. Team chemistry is winning. When you win everything is ok. Ask the great A’s team of the early 70’s. They hated each other, but kept winning all those World Series. The same can be said about the Yankees of the late 70’s, an era highlighted by the big confrontation by Reggie Jackson and Billy Martin. (Reggie Jackson was on both teams, by the way). How about the Cleveland team of Albert Belle, one of the biggest jerks ever. Him and Omar Vizquel hated each other. I don’t buy the team leader concept either. Remember that we used to hear how great a team leader Daulton was. Sometimes the media exaggerates a little bit. Daulton is now talking about Aliens and other galaxies and stuff like that. What you need is players with good character that don’t need an ass whipping to perform, like the Braves (Chipper Jones and Co.) and Joe Torre’s Yankees (Posada, Bernie Williams, Musina, Jeter, etc.) or you can have a team with a bunch of nuts like the ‘93 Phillies that have a lot in common. Screw " Cheer Day . " I've been around since ridiculous of 1964 and it's time to stop this nonsense. This team is going to " cool " itself right out of the division title and the playoffs. This team is collectively a deer in headlights and nobody has a clue to shake that feeling. We're not talking the last few days here. Since approx 6/27 this team has gone , what 22 and 27 ? We keep hearing " they're working hard. " On what. Except for the defense , they look like a bunch of minor leaguers at the plate and on the bases. They appear to not know when to be aggressive at the plate and when to be patient. Where is the game planning ? Somebody better wake up before it's too late. Situational baseball ? This team is incapable of that and that's a shame. Cheer night ? Give me a break. phan
phan you have the attitude of a loser. I am just saying give it a shot. We all have been losers. Why can't we try something different for once and see what happens? They need a jump start you are right, maybe we as fans can give them that start. Beef69
Phillies brass has been silent for years while players take pot-shots at the fans. First they reap the benefits of 45,000 fans per game, then do nothing to improve the personnel on the team, and finally sit silently while we get blamed for a lack of production even when the team is 3000 miles away. The fact is you can't fix it if you don't know what the problem is. Amusing yourself with the notion that the fans are to blame for the team slump exludes the Phils from post-season play. I for one think we have seen the best of this bunch and the Phillies will be struggling to stay ahead of the Nationals in coming seasons. jrquixote
