Cheer Day?

POSTED: Monday, August 18, 2008, 9:07 AM

Good morning.

Today’s post is going to be short because, well, my flight from San Diego to Philadelphia leaves in less than 30 minutes and I don’t have much time. But I wanted to pass this along. It’s from We Should Be GMs: Campaign Cheer. They’re asking fans tomorrow night at Citizens Bank Park – in light of Jimmy Rollins’ comments last week – to cheer uncontrollably for the Phillies … no matter what.

Check it out here.

I detect just a tinge of sarcasm here, but it is an interesting concept.

Cole Hamels finally picks up a win in last night's 2-1 victory over the Padres.

The Ownership should be booed, not the players. Until some recent signs of a thaw, this has been the worst ownership in terms of signing and developing players in all of Baseball. The Owners should be ashamed of themselves, creating fans that are so angry, while they sit in their air-conditioned boxes. Root for the players, they need your help - then wait outside the owners parking lot and pour beer on their cars.

other_craig: to your point, I think we all have to be "front runners", or "fair weather fans", or whatever term applies best, at least to some degree. The prices for everything sports related are so high these days, how can we really justify $100, or $200, or $250 for bad baseball? Sure, once or twice it could be a nice afternoon with the family, but to continue to spend for a whole season and get very little in return is financially irresponsible for most of us these days. If they don't play well, we can't really justify the expenditure all the time; but if they give us something worth watching, then we find ways to make the money work.

The bottom line is, when Ryan Howard is hitting .170 and well behind the HR and RBI pace we expect, and he gets booed for striking out with 2 men on base, I get that. It makes sense. Heck, it is expected. I am sure Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins get it, too. But when Ryan Howard gets booed *AS HE IS COMING TO THE PLATE* with two men on base, I don't get that at all, regardless of how good or bad he has been to that point. Don't we, the fans, still want to see him hit a 3-run bomb in that at-bat, regardless of his prior performance? Don't we want to say to him, "We know you aren't hitting, big guy, but we still expect good things from you"? Instead, we choose boo him before he steps into the batter's box; we choose to tell him that we expect failure before he even has a chance to succeed or fail. That makes no sense to me.

Sooooo......Truth = Jroll = RollinsWasRight?.....btw Bobby, the problem with double posting is that all too many times my longer well thought out posts have been entered only to disappear into wherever...I simply get too pushed for time and take too much effort to lose my work...I have found that I must enter the post 2-3 times to get it to show up even once, sometimes they show up twice and I apologize to everyone for that but it's not thru any problem on my end , it's the mechanism....some have even been entered 4-5 times before they show up once on here!

Now Mark1npt, if I were Truth, at some point I would've insisted we lay off J-Roll because the stress fracture in his made him say something he didn't mean.

sorry, meant to say: "...stress fracture in his ANKLE...", which Truth has been swearing exists all year, but no one has seen evidence of.

If you wanna react to a poor performance or a poor effort, go for it (within reason). But making it personal by booing a guy as he walks to the plate or takes the mound. That's just stupid and to me shows that people have issues in their own lives that they need to take out at the ballpark. Carlos Ruiz can stink up the joint with his bat (and he has so far this season), but when he's coming to the plate, he's my guy, on my team, and while I may grumble to my wife that he better get a hit, I'm not gonna boo him or stand up and scream something crude. So I think that's what Jimmy was talking about and what RollinsWasRight (and others) is saying. For me, his main mistake was referring to Phillies fans in general.

BOBBY: I agree........RollinsWasRight: I did the same thing. I was ticked off when I first saw his remarks, but after the "clarification" the following day I looked at the other side as well. I agree with you and couldn't have said it better myself.....You know, for my part, I am trying to be of the "life is a journey, not a destination" mindset. Looking past entire seasons and declaring any that do not end with a title as a failure is a tough way to follow any team. The overwhelming majority of the time you only set yourself up for disappointment. Many times I think we get caught up in too much negativity, and it gets me down. It's kind of insidious and before you know it, it's all that's left. Yes, I certainly do wish all our Philly teams would win more (some...any) titles, but there is something to be said for enjoying each game along the way for what it is in and of itself.

manny, manny, manny. i will not stop saying it. the organization had a chance at the greatest right handed power hitter of our generation and instead did nothing. the spark this team needed is now batting cleanup in LA and making Jeff Kent look like Chase Utley in April. There should be outrage at this fact, not some nonsense comment by an underperforming shortstop.

bski, very tough to enjoy and cheer the play of this team collectively and the players individually at their current levels of performance....Moyer, Hamels, Burrell, salvaged an otherwise forgettable west coast trip......if the rest of the guys are playing up to the backs of their baseball cards as Ed Wade used to say....well it's time to flip cards and get some other players....

KarenA is right . My thoughts and feelings exactly. Forget Cheer Night ...we need Cher night.... to get Cher in the dugout for one night slapping each Philly in a line-up and Snapping them out of it!!

Mark...Very true. I haven't been enjoying them for a while now. That being said, booing indiscriminately and unmercifully getting all over players is at the opposite end of the spectrum from enjoyment. In between there exists a wide range of preferable outlooks and attitudes that any one of us can take.
