Win record means nothing....only thing that matters is they keep focused and play hard every game...then peak and get hot going into the playoffs.

They just need to maintain their best-in-league status, to keep home-field advantage. Aside from that, just keep everybody (including subs) sharp, and solve the 3B issue. Most likely, the Giants and Braves will beat each other up in their division series, causing the Giants to use Lincecum at least twice, and preventing the Giants from setting up their rotation for the NLCS vs. the Phillies. If the Phillies can avoid facing Lincecum more than once in the NLCS, the parade is a lock.

The Phillies will dispatch the Brewers in a short series, allowing them to set the rotation for the Giants. (Yes, Milwaukee has Braun, Fielder, etc, etc, but they haven't been facing the likes of Halladay, Lee, and Hamels for 100% of the regular season.)

frank105 is dead right. Remember Seattle setting the mark about 10 years ago... and then promptly losing in the first round of the playoffs???
The ONLY things that matter are being healthy, rested and ready to roll once the playoffs start.

Actually, the Mariner lost to the Damned Yankees (sounds like a musical!) in the LCS!
You are, however, quite right stating that winning in the playoff trumps any sort of meaningless regular season nonsense!

It's nice to bet hot right now but come October they have to be hot then, too. Winning during the season doesn't mean that much if you get knocked out in the post season.

Another one of these simple-minded questions that springs from minds insufficient to genuine thought. Have the people who come up with inane questions as philly.come been looking at ESPN.com again? Several days ago, BC went on about the Phillies (possibly) winning 110 games. My response was that regular season wins are absolutely meaningless. The single goal that has any real meaning is winning the World Series! I believe the Minnesota Twins won one year with something of the order of 85 wins. Contrarily, the Seattle Mariners won 116 games in about 2003, or the like, but didn't win the ALCS. With an even higher winning percentage, the Cleveland Indians won 111 games in 1954 but were swept out of the Series in four by the New York Giants. WIN THE SERIES or none of the rest of it matters!

Thought it was the case, but wanted to look. The 1906 Chicago Cubs also won 116 games (while losing but 36). They were dominated in the World Series by the Chicago White Sox, the so-called hitless wonders, being able to win but two games!

Flyers had the best record in the league for a while last year. Had did that work out?

Chris Pronger went down, so did the defense, so did the Flyers.

If the offense improves even slightly they easily can top the wins mark. That being said, there are so many things that can go wrong.

Some of you are schmucks. Fans don't go to the games during the season because they may win the WS. They go so see them win. Your win it all or you didn't accomplish anything is BS. Obviously you aren't long time fans and are spoiled. You should be sentenced to relive the 1965 to 1974...or most of the 50's and early 60's...you are all spoiled by what is currently the best organization and team in baseball...win or lose the WS.

While I wasn't around in 1965 or 1974, I fully agree with you and what you are saying....

Amount of wins means nothing at all. Look at the Phillies last year. They had the best record in baseball and lost to the Giants 4-2. What matters is what team shows up for the playoffs. Sure the Phillies will win more than 100 games but that means nada if they can't get to the World Series.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Follow him on Twitter here.

Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
