Sad news, folks.

Charlie Manuel's mother, June Manuel, died today at Roanoke Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She was 87.

Manuel received the call around noon today after he finished a meeting with his coaches in the clubhouse. His mother had to be hospitalized earlier this week. Manuel is at the ballpark, and will manage Game 2 of the National League Championship Series this afternoon against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Citizens Bank Park. It is unclear if Manuel will  fly on the team charter to Los Angeles after today's game. The Phillies have the day off tomorrow.

June Manuel still lived in Buena Vista, Va., where Manuel grew up. She is survived by 10 children.

Manuel was very close to his mother, talking to her several times a week. In fact, she often called her son after games -- sometimes to tell him what he did wrong. Manuel recently told a story in the manager's office at Dolphin Stadium about the time he became manager of the Cleveland Indians before the 2000 season. A local TV station apparently visited Buena Vista and interviewed his mother. The reporter asked what she thought about her son becoming manager of the Indians.

"That's all well and fine," she said. "But somebody's got to take this trash out."

Classic.

Manuel was in his usual spot behind the batting cage before the game. Players and coaches from both sides, including Dodgers manager Joe Torre, expressed their condolences.

Funeral arrangments are pending. I will provide details as soon as I get them.

Ouch! Well this could do 1 of 2 things for him / the team. They could rally around him and lay a whooping on the Dodgers today, or Charlie could be distracted and make errors in coaching. I'm going with the rally! Come on Phils! Win it for June and Charlie!

My deepest sympathies and respect to you and your family. I wish you much love and support through this time. I am sure you will feel the love of our people her in Philly and around this great nation. I am glad you will be with your team today and tonight. I appreciate all you have done for our baseball team, and I admire your ability to be so down to earth and human in today's often impersonal world. G-d bless your mother, you and your family and friends.

Does anyone know anything about Charlie's personal life? Is he married or does he have any children?

Charlie is a rare, legitimate good guy so there's no doubt his mother was a good woman. Let's pray that Charlie is hanging in there. The game means nothing compared to his loss. I'm assuming his mother was in her 90s so at least she lived a good long life & now we have another angel up above to help the Phillies win the World Series. If anyone deserves a World Series victory, it's Charlie. I hope he goes down in history as one of the Phillies greatest managers. Take care Charlie & this town will understand if you need to be away for a few days. You've surrounded yourself with great baseball men like Jimy Williams & Davey Lopes. We thank June for raising a great human being who in turn spreads his positive attitude towards others. Thank you June & thank you Charlie as it's been an incredible ride so far. Take care Charlie.

Uncle Charlie pulled his team through 167 games, so it's now up to the players and the rest of the organization and the city to help pull him through the rest. Death is horrible, but when it's someone in your family, it makes it that much harder. I hope she knew her son won last night.

Charlie, we all love and respect you as a manager and as a person. No words can express what losing someone that you love so much feels like. I, and all phillies fans know that you will do what is best for the team and most importantly for yourself. God bless you Charlie.

phillylexis300, I feel sorry for your family & friends because you're a soulless person. There's no doubt that you look in the mirror knowing you are insecure. Sure you think you're great but you know you're scum. Charlie Manuel's mother died today. Baseball seasons come & go but we only have one birth mother. I'm not only praying for Charlie during this time but I pray for you too because unless you realize what IS important in life, then you'll never get it before it's too late & you're gone. When that happens, would you be happy if people went about their business without paying their last respects to you? I don't think I'd be so upset about this if you didn't write "shut it" at the end. Babs, don't pay attention to phillylexis as he/she doesn't realize that the Phillies could still win game 2 without Charlie considering the Phils are loaded with ex-managers as coaches.

Sad news, that kind of hit me off-guard I guess. Having lost my Dad just over two years ago, and him being my reason for becoming a Phils fan in the first place, this news really brought it all back to me... My condolences, Charlie. (PS- I don't know his history, but apparently, Charlie is engaged! I saw his fiance on a morning show the other day.)

Sorry for your loss Charlie, sad news. I was glad to see Charlie out there today though. If Ruiz blocks that 3rd strike, Myers only gives up 2 runs. Not a horrible outing from him, just tough luck. GO PHILS!!!!!!
