Charlie Manuel wants to see Darin Ruf. Will it happen in September?

If you can hit the ball really far, it will not take long for Charlie Manuel to notice. If you can hit the ball really far and with great frequency, Manuel will do more than notice. If you can do all of this while the Phillies flounder, Manuel will start thinking big things.

If you can hit the ball really far, it will not take long for Charlie Manuel to notice. If you can hit the ball really far and with great frequency, Manuel will do more than notice. If you can do all of this while the Phillies flounder, Manuel will start thinking big things.

Such is the case with Darin Ruf, the 26-year-old slugging first baseman at double-A Reading. Manuel has watched recent video of Ruf's assault on the Eastern League.

The Phillies manager is interested.

"He's had an extraordinary year," Manuel said. "Ruf is someone who pops out at you. Ruf is trying to hit his way to the big leagues. That's what it used to be like. You had to do something to get to the big leagues. Evidently, Ruf is an old throwback."

Manuel said he wants to see Ruf, whether it be now or in spring training. He has yet to discuss the idea with his boss, Ruben Amaro Jr., but made it sound like he will stump for Ruf's candidacy. Rosters expand Saturday.

Ruf has swatted 36 home runs in 2012 with 18 in August alone. On Monday, he broke Greg Luzinski's 1970 mark for most total bases ever in a Reading season. His 36 home runs are more than any player in all of affiliated minor-league baseball.

Of course, the decision to promote Ruf is not Manuel's. Some scouts are skeptical whether Ruf has a true position in the majors. He is blocked at first base by Ryan Howard. He has played 33 career games in left field, with 23 of them coming in 2012.

His work there is limited and not pristine.

The Phillies plan for Ruf to play the outfield in winter ball. He will likely be added to the 40-man roster during the offseason if not summoned in September. That would guarantee a spring audition.

"He's on the radar screen," Amaro said Monday. "It really depends on whether he can get playing time. It is something we'll continue to talk about."

The Phillies are already committed to playing time for two corner outfielders in Domonic Brown and Nate Schierholtz while evaluating for next season. The only true center fielder on the roster is John Mayberry Jr. That could affect plans.

Manuel said playing Ruf in the outfield during a major-league game could be a risk. Then again, he's enamored with the power potential.

"If a guy can hit," Manuel said, "his defense gets a little bit better."

I'm sure that's one of the reasons, despite consistent excellence all season in AA, he stayed put in Reading...as to inflate the monster numbers and maybe create a buzz...His age shouldn't be a factor to rush to move him though...If he can be netter than Ty WIggington as a RH power bat off the bench, or spot starter against a lefty at 1B, so be it...If he can offer more, great.

Why is Howard untouchable? Is it his salary that hangs over Amaro like a sword or is Howards batting average and defense a BIG PLUS!!!

Those of you wondering why he hasn't been called up yet. It's because he's in AA. Read again, "fans", AA. He's 26 and beating up on kids, basically.
He may be a true surprise, but the reality is that he probably will not be anything special.

Actually, a 22/23 year old in the Eastern league who hails from So Cal,Texas, or Fla has tons more real baseball experience in the form of games than the 26 year old CornHusker...He's a hitter, with power...possessing just 2 of the 5 tools ML scouts are looking for...But if those 2 tools (Hitting, hitting with power) can pan out, that's all that matters.

Agreed. Better to have 2 tools - and truly have them - than have 5 tools officially approved by the Billy Conlin Happy Club only to show up with only 1 and a half of them.

So why is Howard untouchable, tulsaphil? Were you able to find out?

What's with the Phillies scouting system? Why is it that all their decent position players play one position (first base)? Also, why hasn't Ruf been moved to the outfield sooner? I would say that the Phillies management/scouting system leave alot to be desired!

It does seem that way, as the first basemen often can hit, but usually are not athletic at all, taking away chances to move to other positions...All throughout the minors, tons of these guys get blocked, and end up as career minor leaguers (with the most elite groomed as DH's if they're lucky...If you count in OFs Domingo Santana and Anthony Gose,1B Jonathan Singleton, SS Jonathan Villar, and P Jared Cosart (Pence and Oswalt deals, shots that didn't take) then the phillies system would be considered a gold mine...It takes time to recover from those types of deals. Ruf's ascension really has torpedoed because of the POWER SURGE...that took him from a guy who would have a secure monor league career to a legitimate option for a GM to think about, hopefully.

Ruf stayed in college a year too long...drafted in 2009...minor progression right on target --- Cutters in 09, LKW in '10, CLW in '11 and Reading '12. His overall MiLB slash....305/.386/.519/.905..pretty darn good.

I have to agree, Cholly has made many bad moves all season long. Im just baffled that upper management hasent called him out on some of these. Chescoguy- who cares if Ruf cant play the outfield that good, the question is, who do they have that can????? Wont hurt to give him a shot, thats all im saying!
