Castro passes physical, finalizes deal

Veteran utilityman Juan Castro has passed his physical and finalized a one-year contract with the Phillies. The contract includes a club option for 2011.

We reported last week that the parties had agreed to terms, but Castro was out of the country and could not immediately take the physical.

Castro, 37, is a .230 hitter, with a .270 on-base percentage, in 15 major league seasons. In 57 games with the Dodgers last year, he batted .277, while playing shortstop, second base, third base and left field.

He will play a utlility role with the Phils, replacing Eric Bruntlett.

With all due respect to Juan Castro, no one can truly replace Eric Bruntlett. Except for Luis Aguayo. And Tomás Pérez. But no one else.

Toronto won't want Hamels salary. I'd try Happ, Taylor (not Brown), and Mathieson or Durbin for Halliday!!

I would insist that Toronto take phillies80-08wschamps in a deal for Halliday. He can have a blast on the Toronto Globe & Mail message boards.

NO BRUNTLET-NO WORLD SERIES. That little bearded baeball vagabond was their good luck charm. Also the signing of Polanco guarantees no World Series as well. Phils are printng money down at the ballpark and they sign this guy. What a joke!! Is Giles baqck in charge????

seriously...i like placido and all. But if we want to win another WS we're gonna have to beat the Yankees. How do we not make a play for Chone Figgins? They offered freaking Mike Lowell $50mm and they won't show the same to this kid? He's a freaking stud.
