Castillo's late arrival called a 'miscommunication'

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Charlie Manuel said he wasn't disappointed because he doesn't get disappointed. But he had put Luis Castillo in his lineup Tuesday and expected the second baseman to be here because he does not have a great deal of time to prove he can make the Phillies.

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Charlie Manuel said he wasn't disappointed because he doesn't get disappointed. But he had put Luis Castillo in his lineup Tuesday and expected the second baseman to be here because he does not have a great deal of time to prove he can make the Phillies.

"I didn't talk to Castillo," Manuel said. "I was told he was going to be here and I put him in my lineup."

Yet Castillo is not here. He is expected sometime this afternoon after what general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. called a "miscommunication" between the Phillies, Castillo and his agent, Seth Levinson.

Amaro said Castillo is driving across the state and is expected in Clearwater sometime this afternoon.

"We thought we had thing set up for this morning," Amaro said. "Evidently they didn't get the communication it was set up for this morning. He thought it was tomorrow."

The Phillies were so sure, they had their doctor waiting to perform the physical on Castillo.

"I was surprised this morning that he didn't show up," Amaro said. "It happens."

That "miscommunication" led to the Phillies clearly sending out a message this morning by posting Wednesday's lineup minutes before reporters left the clubhouse. Castillo wasn't in that either.

Manuel was asked what he would have done if placed in Castillo's place.

"If it was me, I would have been here two days ago," Manuel said. "But it wasn't me."

Think the message has been sent?
