Carpenter optioned, Escalona recalled

POSTED: Saturday, May 16, 2009, 11:33 PM

Just a quickie after rain helped the Phils sweep tonight’s doubleheader. Andrew Carpenter was optioned back to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, and the team recalled LHP Sergio Escalona from Double-A Reading.

In 17.1 innings this year, the 24-year-old Escalona has allowed 15 hits, and four runs. He has struck out 16 and walked eight. He has a 2.08 ERA and 10 saves in 14 games. Now good night already.

Wow. This is definitely big. Look for Taschner to be traded or released now. I'll definitely look into this more tomorrow (technically this evening) and report on it at www.4daysrest.com - Be sure to look out for it.

Not so fast, JC isn't back yet and we don't know how effective he'll be now that he's not taking that stuff, you know, that banned substance.

Bullpen's just overworked and Cairo hasn't been doing much so they need an extra arm right now more than a 2nd utility guy off the bench. Taschner isn't going anywhere right now. Like Mark said, JC is still out and they'll need to see how effective he is once he's back.

please lord make this be the end of Taschner, the guy is a barrel buster and a total waste in the bullpen. Every time he enters the game you know that it's either over or about to be over. He has below average stuff and just always puts guys on, please toss him now and get a right handed bat up here with Escalona.

You are right Rob, but you could say the same about almost the entire pitching staff, save Madson and Hamels in his last few starts.

Hum, another lefty to the pen. Maybe they are strongly considering putting Happ in the starting rotation for good. I wonder who would be the odd man out if that happens. Or it could be a temporary thing. The bullpen is being stretched a lot this early by the ineffectiveness of the starting pitchers and Lidge has struggle big time on top of that.

Mark1npt -You are an idiot. You should take some ginkgo biloba to help with your mental problem. That is the dequivalent to what JC took.

The bullpen is simply tired from too many games in a row and too many extra innings...thank God for the rain shortened game last night. The new arm will probably get well used to day, too then back to the Minors in a week. Just one of many in-season moves to be made. And yes, isn't there some right handed bat out there that can actually hit? Cairo and Bruntlett are an embarrassment in the batter's box.

Park looks to have finally come around. I was probably jumping the gun on wishing Park out of there, earlier. Maybe I'm thinking wrongly about Taschner, but I doubt it. I hope he isn't this year's Adam Eaton!

Brun. cannot hit. Sure, but, but, he can play almost every spot. Perhaps Donald could do that but the Phils will not bring him up. As to Tash., they will keep him until Romero comes back. I would say that Happ will take Jamie's place if after another start, he implodes. But, Charlie will give Jaime one more start at the least.

OK, that’s it! I have seen enough of Chan Ho Park. The Phils come right out of the gate and stake him to a 3 run lead only to see him turn around and surrender 3 runs on 4 hits, 1 walk, and 2 wild pitches on 38 pitches. The first inning has been his worst this season. He has now surrendered a total of 10 runs on 14 hits and 5 walks in the first inning of his 7 starts. Time for Happ to take his spot in the rotation, IMO.

What about your "sterling" defensive catcher behind the plate. Not blocking much today.

Happ to rotation. Sundays start doomed Park. By the way, "where were you when the hits fit the Chan?"

can't blame ruiz for a guy throwing balls 2 ft short of his mitt. park is absolute stiff who needs to be optioned or put in the pen, deep in the pen. its time for happ. and cut taschner too, every out he gets is a surprise.

Another good win against a bad team. That defensive play by the Nats in the top of the 8th was really poor.......The bullpen stepped up and got the job done. Escalona picks up the win today, as did Carpenter yesterday. Nice for them........Funny to see Eyre in to start the 9th. It’s understandable though, as Lidge pitched on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, throwing a fair amount of pitches in the process. Since we have an off day tomorrow I guess Charlie figured he could extend him for a hitter or two. Luckily Wheeler gave Lidge the reverse black cat, saying that Lidge never throws double-play balls because he is a fly ball/strikeout pitcher, only to see Lidge throw a double-play ball to end the game.........Good to see us beat a team we are supposed to beat but yeah, sillybilly, can't get too pumped about it. Let’s hope the offense got healthy off the Nats and they continue to hit well.

bski, dull...correct on both accounts......Park should never be allowed to start another game as long as he lives.

I don't care if they're playing Lakewood, a four game sweep on the road is something to get excited about. I've been all over Taschner but I tip my hat to him today, after the hit batter he settled in and kept us in the game. I also agree, Park to the pen, Happ to the rotation and only 14 more games until Romero is back.
