The Phillies purchased the contract of righthander Drew Carpenter from double-A Reading and designated infielder Andy Tracy for assignment to make room for Carpenter on the 25-man roster. They also placed lefthander Mike Zagurski on the 60-day disabled list to make room for Carpenter on the 40-man roster.

Doesn't matter....Phils flop in big game...situational hitting and BP woes cost us the game tonight....was looking good for awhile but when you don't hit or score after the 2nd inning, how many games are you gonna win? C'mon guys, we thought you learned something the last 2 weeks......

They have a nasty habit of following up inspiring wins with deflating losses......and Truth, I mean Jimmy wonders why we're all bi-polar?

The good guys are back in first place, even without a closer. Season series so far METS 10, Fillies 5. Get ready to take some more lumps next week in Shea, Filly fans. Maybe 13-5 after that series? And by the way, always good to see that about 25% of CB ballpark are Met fans, as usual. They made enough noise during the Mets rally in the 8th that it sounded like the game was at Shea. They'll have a happy trip home!

Wizard-how's that GED coming along? You could've been cruising with a 2 1/2 game lead if you didn't gag up that lead last night faster than Ron Jeremy's ex-wife. When it comes down to it, we own the mets, You're the yappy little dogs and we have the leash. Enjoy September baseball because you won't be playing in October, we will. P.S.- we'll flush twice, it's a long way to Queens.

We lost to the Mets bullpen????? I knew we were in trouble when Lidge came in in the 8th. He never pitches as well in non-save situations. I guess not enough adrenaline rush. On either side of the plate.

KMG Again, Mets 10, Fillies 5. And two of the Filly wins were handed to them by the Mets bullpen, like last night. Should have been 12-3 right now. Yeah, KMG, I see how the Fillies own the Mets. LOL "yappy little dogs"? Aren't you clever. You're a hoot! PS: Have you noticed that ever since FUtley opened his fowl mouth at the Home Run Derby he offense has for the most part gone south?

Well, guess what Wizard? Your bullpen is PART of your team. Good or bad. If ANY team wins because of YOUR bullpen, it's still a win. Just like tonight. Your win was against our bullpen. Do you think you didn't deserve the win? As for Utley.....His offense was slowing down way before before the Home Run Derby. It's actually improved the last several weeks. Get over it! LOL!

Norma, Yes you are right. The Mets bullpen is part of this team and has been awful for the most part. The Mets would be 10 games in first if not for them. It has gotten so bad at times, I almost can't watch when some of them come in. Santana would have 6 more wins right now if they didn't blow the leads he turned over to them. Right now he's second in the league in ERA and first in innings pitched. I have to say now he is worth the big bucks if he can continue to pitch like this the next few years. It's hard to have confidence, even if they do make the playoffs, with the current pitching woes. Losing their closer, Wagner, was a severe blow. Add the fact that Maine is out now too, it's going to be tough the rest of the season. Expect the Mets to use some of the wads of money they have on signing relief pitchers in the off season. They are making a fortune with their own TV station. Anyway, the Philly-Met rivalry is becoming one of the best in baseball. This race will go down to the wire.

Dont worry about the Wiz, folks. School's open and nowhemust concentrate on getting out of the seventh grade, where he has spent the last three years of his pathetic life.

mick314. Instead of adding something intelligent to these blogs you revert to personal attacks. That's what wisdom challenged people usually do when they can't find the words to respond to an insightful blog. Way to go, "genius".

The Wizard........I can feel your pain. Except for last night's loss, our bullpen has saved tons of games for us this year. Glad the shoes on the other foot this year. LOL!

Norma...consistently effective relief pitchers are becoming a true commodity in today's baseball. The days of starters in 3 or 4 man rotations pitching 50% or more complete games ended 25+ years ago. The game has really changed.

Yeah. Too bad! I'm of the age that remembers frequent complete games by starters. As I've often said here......I HATE PITCH COUNTS! I'm a firm believer in *muscle memory*. But in this day and age, with pitchers salaries sky high, it's all about "protecting their arms".

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Follow him on Twitter here.

Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
