CC and Lee texting about Bronx meeting
Andy Martino
When the fans made the transition in the late innings tonight form “Beat L.A.” to “Yankees Suck,” this clincher felt inevitable. Congratulations to the Phillies for achieving what the franchise had never before done by winning two straight National League pennants.
Speaking of the Yanks, our man Marc Narducci in Anaheim learned an interesting tidbit from CC Sabathia, and Cliff Lee confirmed it today. The two lefties, former longtime teammates and still good friends from their days together with the Cleveland Indians, have been texting back and forth in anticipation of a potential Game 1 matchup.
The Yankees hold a three-games-to-one lead over the Los Angeles Angels in the ALCS.
"We have texted back and forth, but we haven't talked," Sabathia said before yesterday's workout at Angel Stadium.
"It's never anything super important; I don't even remember exactly what we said," Lee said. "We texted when I got traded. We joked about hitting [in the National League] a little bit."
Sabathia is excited for his friend's success with the Phillies, although that could change next week. "He throws the ball where he wants to, using both sides of the plate," Sabathia said. "He's a tough pitcher, and I'm happy to see he is doing well."
Said Lee: "I've stayed pretty close with him since he left Cleveland," Lee said. "But that might have to change next week."
Just one of many subplots sure to develop in what should continue to be an exciting October/November. Enjoy your post-clinch parties.
I hope Amaro can lock lee up in a long term contract. MY guess Ruben willwork on this. I posted this a few days ago and dont think it got on. Whats the possibility of sending Michael Taylor to AAA next year and see if he can learn to play 3rd base. This may be along shot but there is no room for him in the outfield and hitters like him dont come along very often. Third base is a reaction position and I have no idea if he has the arm for the throws. Taylor hit 361 in low A last year was promoted to high A and hit 329 with 27 doubles inslightly less than half a season. This year he hit 333 in AA before being moved up. This may be completly off the wall. We have an option on Feliz for next year and Im guessing we will use it. After Feliz's Home runhis next at bat was awful. Anyway on to the world series. Don w
Taylor has, as far as I know, never played the infield, let alone third base specifically - it isn't that easy to pick up, since the kinds of reactions are very different from the ones in the outfield. Judging by what I have read, I believe he has a reasonably strong arm, but still has accuracy problems. judas_priest
They're going to need Taylor to play LF by about 2011. Ibanez isn't getting any younger. There must be a 3rd baseman with 20-30 HR potential available out there. jman- They don't have Feliz for his bat. He's an excellent 3rd baseman, and has saved lots of runs with his fielding. I believe Ibanez is signed through 2011, so unless he breaks down, they won't need a leftfielder until '12. If Taylor is that good, they will find a way to get him into the lineup, even if that means (I know it seems unthinkable right now) trading Victorino at some point in the next 2 years. bobby
Comment removed.- Cliff Lee, CC Sabathia, can't you just hear the angst coming from Cleveland... beagle29
Come on Beagle, they have their CC...Carlos Carrasco...he he he. cadilacjack
Trading Victorino is unthinkable. He has stepped up his game to another level. Shane is among the best outfielders in the game and a toughout particularly so batting righthanded. Don w
I've been touting Feliz value all year as well as Ruiz. What have we to loose by trying him at 3rd in AAA? Hudson wont sign to be a backup. Orlando may be the best defensive 2nd baseman in baseball has very good speed and is a 285-310 hitter. Don w- Trading Victorino is certainly not unthinkable in a year or two. I'm not advocating that the Phils trade him, by the way, just pointing out that if they have a strong young guy who's ready to step into the CF role, the GM could (and should) look at whether it makes sense to use the veteran player as trade material to upgrade elsewhere. That's what good GM's do. (BTW, has the Phillies Zone finally gone under? The banner at the top now links to the Philly.com sports page. Hmmm...) bobby
- Back to normal now. Must have been a temporary glitch. I thought maybe Andy bailed on the blog... bobby
You guys are classic, we're about to go to our second straight World Series...haven't even reached Game 1...and you guys are already taking about trading players in the off-season. Stop and smell the roses, geez. JimG- Lighten up, JimG. This is comments board and we're just talking. Nobody is complaining or saying we should actually trade anyone. bobby
oh dont worry... Vicarino wont be there tooo long. Although i love him, i bought his jersey last year. That means he will be gone like the rest of my jerseys..... Lindros,Kerse,T.O. and the one that still hurts.. dawk...wimper wimper. stevo8drum
Victorino visibly and tangibly improves his game every year. As long as that keeps going on, the Phillies would be insane to trade him just to make room for a prospect. jtj06
