Brown headed for Lehigh Valley

POSTED: Friday, June 25, 2010, 10:19 AM

Domonic Brown is headed for Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Chuck LaMar, the Phillies' assistant general manager in charge of player development, said the move could be made as soon as today.

Brown, the Phillies' top minor-league prospect, has earned the promotion with a spectacular first half at double-A Reading. In 65 games, the 22-year-old right fielder has batted .318 with 16 doubles, three triples, 15 home runs and 47 RBIs.

"We wanted him to play half a year at Reading, which he has, and we think he's ready," LaMar said.

Brown's dominance also earned him a spot in the minor-league Futures Game scheduled for Sunday July 11 in Angel Stadium, the same site as the major-league All-Star Game.

"It is a big honor and privilege for me," Brown said when asked about the Futures Game Wednesday. "It's the best of the best there, so I'm going to go and have fun."

Brown was also asked Wednesday if he felt he was ready to make the move from Reading to Lehigh Valley.

"Man, I don't worry about that," he said. "I leave that to (general manager) Ruben Amaro and Chuck LaMar. I'm ready when they say I'm ready. I'm just out here playing my game and having fun. I'm just happy to be playing baseball."

Lakewood pitcher Jarred Cosart is the other representative from the Phillies' farm system playing in the Futures Game, but LaMar said the team has no plans of moving up the 20-year-old righthander. Cosart is 7-2 with a 3.44 ERA at Lakewood.

"We want him to finish his first full year in Lakewood," LaMar said.

What about the man they simply call "Rizzo" in Reading. He has hit nearly .500 in his last ten games there including five homers with power to all fields. Numbers the beat writer for the Reading Eagle called "Ruthean". Great DH for the R-Phils. He would make a nice second lefthanded PH off the bench for the Big Phils.

If I read another typical bring up Dom Brown, Phillies are cheep, the sky is falling post, I'm gonna be sick. You would think the last 3 years would have cured you trolls of your idiocy. Guess not.

Yeah, he's hitting over .300 the last 14 games but that include a 4 single-game that started the 14 games in Florida. The last 7 games he's hitting .250, 5 points above his current avg. His hits lately are mostly weak grounders that are finding holes, a lot with first base occupied, which opens the hole between first and second for him. He's also been a groundout and DP machine the last few days.

The only solution to the Phil's needs right now are to trade Jason Werth for pitching. Period. Brown will be here sooner than later and we'll gamble on a rookie outfield's liability rather than a patch-work pitching rotation and injuried bullpen. Anyone who doesn't see this move is a moron, plain and simple. We put NO time into developing Werth, he cost us nothing. Built him up, won a title, now trade him for maximum value = pitching.

Ruben, bring Brown up on Aug. 31 so that he is playoff eligible!!! I'd rather have him on the bench than Dobbs or Gload. Then he can platoon with Francisco in LF in the World Series while Raul is the DH.

The Phils will probably handle Brown similar to the way Atlanta handled Heyward. They might call him up in Sept when rosters expand just to gauge what they’ll have to do in the off-season with Werth and maybe Ibanez. By the way the Phils have one of the wealthiest minority owners in all of baseball, his name Middleton (cigar king). He is the person who put pressure on the majority owners to increase payroll and he is also the one who knelt down next to Ryno and said “I want my trophy back”. He has more $$ than Steinbrener, this according to Conlin. I wouldn’t be surprised if they increase payroll at the deadline by taking on expiring contracts maybe Wood and not trading prospects. Just a hunch.

It is in the Phils best interest that Ibanez continues to produce consistently. It is way too much to ask a 22 year old kid, who has never faced major league pitching to step into a big role during a playoff run in the second half of the season. Ibanex may not be the player he was during the first half of last year, but he's had some clutch RBI's during the last couple weeks.

The Ryan Howard situation had less to do with his readiness and more to do with Thome being in front of him.

Do you people know, it ALWAYS comes down to money. Thanks for everything Jason, Domonic will fit in nicely at right field.

Every one of you fans that keep wishing for an Ibanez trade are wasting your time. If you think Amaro is holding back on a trade, you've lost your mind. The reason it isn't going to happen is because nobody wants him, and if on the off-chance that he is hitting come the trade deadline and somebody who is out of their mind actually wants to pick him up, then RAJ will pull the trigger and bring up the kid. Until then, to continue offering that as a solution is a waste of time.
