Brown headed for Lehigh Valley

POSTED: Friday, June 25, 2010, 10:19 AM

Domonic Brown is headed for Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Chuck LaMar, the Phillies' assistant general manager in charge of player development, said the move could be made as soon as today.

Brown, the Phillies' top minor-league prospect, has earned the promotion with a spectacular first half at double-A Reading. In 65 games, the 22-year-old right fielder has batted .318 with 16 doubles, three triples, 15 home runs and 47 RBIs.

"We wanted him to play half a year at Reading, which he has, and we think he's ready," LaMar said.

Brown's dominance also earned him a spot in the minor-league Futures Game scheduled for Sunday July 11 in Angel Stadium, the same site as the major-league All-Star Game.

"It is a big honor and privilege for me," Brown said when asked about the Futures Game Wednesday. "It's the best of the best there, so I'm going to go and have fun."

Brown was also asked Wednesday if he felt he was ready to make the move from Reading to Lehigh Valley.

"Man, I don't worry about that," he said. "I leave that to (general manager) Ruben Amaro and Chuck LaMar. I'm ready when they say I'm ready. I'm just out here playing my game and having fun. I'm just happy to be playing baseball."

Lakewood pitcher Jarred Cosart is the other representative from the Phillies' farm system playing in the Futures Game, but LaMar said the team has no plans of moving up the 20-year-old righthander. Cosart is 7-2 with a 3.44 ERA at Lakewood.

"We want him to finish his first full year in Lakewood," LaMar said.

Im so sick of people claming the Phils should just "trade" Ibanez. There is NOT one team in MLB that would even take 39 yrd old Ibanez's salary, let alone give us anything for him. Anyone who says this must be still living with their parent and unaware of how the business world works. The Phils FO overpaid for a guy that was over 35 yrs old and the Phils historically are not GOOD with contracts and older players. Reference Moyer, Howard and Polanco! Moyer's 8 million dollard handcuffs the Phils from a top line starter for a genuine playoff push and WS victory. Moyer is not going to beat or shutdown top AL teams in WS, Yankees, Redsox etc... The Phils needed Halladay and Lee to contend for World Series, anything else is just to stay competitive and continue the Sellouts at the Bank. WHen Lee is shutdown our offense with LA or Mets or Braves everyone will remember again why everyone always says, "Pitching wins championships" I would have rather had Lee get Howards 25 million a year and gone out and gotten another young power hitting 1st baseman. WHy did Howard do in the World Series to earn that kind of money, but what did Lee do to earn the mOney? Catch my drift. Phils dont NEED Howard, he is probably the worst of all the Elite Firstbasemen, Cabrera, Gonzalez, Pujols, Texiera etc. There are plenty of big guys with power who only feast on fastballs. WIth all of the good Phils hitter ahead of him its only natural he has his kind of numbers. I want to see Howards numbers on Houston or KC or Pirates. He is just a product of his environment. 9 out of 10 times he will hit into Dp or Strikeout with game on the line!

Enjoy your three extra home games cheesesteaks. Maybe you can talk Selig into giving you Cliff Lee back as well. Total garbage. Let's go Mets!

JOP: What's wrong you don't like hot dogs or pork and provolone on an Amoroso's roll? How about the Bull's barbeque? Mets stink - go play your subway series some more. What a horrible out of control city NY is with its horrible food. Even your bagels suck.

As good as he may one day be, he still has not hit anything above AA baseball. Give the kid some time.

Only idiots like PhillyboyinNYC would call a team with a top 5 payroll cheap. Keep'em coming though...I enjoy the laughs.

I hope the Phillies brass resist the temptation to bring Brown up to the show. Give him the at-bats he needs to develop. If he comes up and sits on the bench - pinch-hitting or occasionally spot-starting - it will be a serious setback for our best prospect. Domonic needs to play every day.
