Brown headed for Lehigh Valley
Bob Brookover, Inquirer Baseball Columnist
Domonic Brown is headed for Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Chuck LaMar, the Phillies' assistant general manager in charge of player development, said the move could be made as soon as today.
Brown, the Phillies' top minor-league prospect, has earned the promotion with a spectacular first half at double-A Reading. In 65 games, the 22-year-old right fielder has batted .318 with 16 doubles, three triples, 15 home runs and 47 RBIs.
"We wanted him to play half a year at Reading, which he has, and we think he's ready," LaMar said.
Brown's dominance also earned him a spot in the minor-league Futures Game scheduled for Sunday July 11 in Angel Stadium, the same site as the major-league All-Star Game.
"It is a big honor and privilege for me," Brown said when asked about the Futures Game Wednesday. "It's the best of the best there, so I'm going to go and have fun."
Brown was also asked Wednesday if he felt he was ready to make the move from Reading to Lehigh Valley.
"Man, I don't worry about that," he said. "I leave that to (general manager) Ruben Amaro and Chuck LaMar. I'm ready when they say I'm ready. I'm just out here playing my game and having fun. I'm just happy to be playing baseball."
Lakewood pitcher Jarred Cosart is the other representative from the Phillies' farm system playing in the Futures Game, but LaMar said the team has no plans of moving up the 20-year-old righthander. Cosart is 7-2 with a 3.44 ERA at Lakewood.
"We want him to finish his first full year in Lakewood," LaMar said.
- Trade Raul! ChrisM
- beegal99 - be careful, phillyboyinnyc has been a fan his whole life AND posts here regularly, so with that kind of credibility, he just knows more. At least that's what he insinuates - even if he has a position that many disagree with and has no logic to back up his point. I also can't see how bringing up a 22-year old (albeit a talented one) who hasn't seen a single pitch above Reading is somehow the "right" move. If he were better than Ibanez - or hell, even Dobbs - he would have displaced them by now. For a team with World Series aspirations, I fail to see the problem with letting Dom work up through the system. A rookie should not be the difference maker on a team that has won 2 pennants in a row. Doctor D
- Hitting the ball is one-half of a non-Dh's job. He still needs polish with his fielding. It would nice to have Dom in LF in 2012, but next year it would mean that a.) Raul is not playing or b.) Werthy is a Dodger or RedSock (?) and we start four consectutive lefties at the plate. Chase, The Dominator, and Raul have hit lefties fairly well, and Ryno is getting better at it.
- But he has started hitting the ball... balitok
I always like to see the idea of trading Ibanez bandied about. Good frickin luck to you. You can cut him and eat his salary, or maybe trade him next summer if he's playing well, (though they won't want to trade him if he's playing well, unless the season is in the toilet). Unless Ibanez hits below .200 the rest of the summer, you're not going to see Brown before Sept. 1. B in DC
Should trade this kid now get 3 maybe 4 good lower level top prospects we dont need another left handed bat in the lineup UnionsSuck- yo, Zoe - what GM is gonna give up pitching for Werth? In case you forgot, Werth is a 2 month rental. Amaro has virtually no leverage in dealing Werth. Any team in the playoff chase is gonna give up a good pitcher for Werth, right? Don't be so quick to pull the moron card. vafan
- I'd love to sit here all day and call out some of you on these comments but let me just say this instead. Say it out loud before you post it. Maybe it'll register with you by hearing how stupid it sounds. vafan
Any of you who say he's ready for the majors now is an absolutely dumb and ignorant FOOL who knows NOTHING about baseball. The kid spent HALF a year in AA and you think he's ready for major league pitching (lincecum/johnson/oswalt/hudson/etc)?? You're idiots. AAA is the perfect spot for him. Let him tear it up there for a few months and see how he does. THEN we'll find out if he's ready for the show... thomaspfoolery

Phillyboyinnyc- I just moved to nyc from philly and was wondering where a good place to go watch a phillies game would be. I appreciate any suggestions. Thanks. college33
I hope to see his education continue at AAA, and look forward to seeing him called up for September. Let's not get too in love with a guy that's never seen ML pitching on a daily basis. TBear
All those bashing Ibanez I am sure were singing a different tune this time last year. mike l
Why are we watching Ibanez maybe start to hit when we could be watching a legitimate possible star getting ML AB's? Also.. buy low, sell high. If we can convince someone that Ibanez still has something left and that he's about to "go on a streak" TRADE HIM! Byron Evans
