Brown headed for Lehigh Valley

POSTED: Friday, June 25, 2010, 10:19 AM

Domonic Brown is headed for Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Chuck LaMar, the Phillies' assistant general manager in charge of player development, said the move could be made as soon as today.

Brown, the Phillies' top minor-league prospect, has earned the promotion with a spectacular first half at double-A Reading. In 65 games, the 22-year-old right fielder has batted .318 with 16 doubles, three triples, 15 home runs and 47 RBIs.

"We wanted him to play half a year at Reading, which he has, and we think he's ready," LaMar said.

Brown's dominance also earned him a spot in the minor-league Futures Game scheduled for Sunday July 11 in Angel Stadium, the same site as the major-league All-Star Game.

"It is a big honor and privilege for me," Brown said when asked about the Futures Game Wednesday. "It's the best of the best there, so I'm going to go and have fun."

Brown was also asked Wednesday if he felt he was ready to make the move from Reading to Lehigh Valley.

"Man, I don't worry about that," he said. "I leave that to (general manager) Ruben Amaro and Chuck LaMar. I'm ready when they say I'm ready. I'm just out here playing my game and having fun. I'm just happy to be playing baseball."

Lakewood pitcher Jarred Cosart is the other representative from the Phillies' farm system playing in the Futures Game, but LaMar said the team has no plans of moving up the 20-year-old righthander. Cosart is 7-2 with a 3.44 ERA at Lakewood.

"We want him to finish his first full year in Lakewood," LaMar said.

Ibanez's approach at the plate is light years from what it was earlier in the year. But I would not expect any of you keyboard coaches to realize that. You guys were 3 inning and 1 at-bat players in Little League. keep up the good work dopes.

This is a good decision for Brown. Let him face better pitching and see where he is at come September. A September call up would be great for him and the team if he can contribute down the stretch.

"I'd love to have a Werth/Victorino/Brown threesome in the outfield," That just sounds nasty

Talent wins and this is the next step in his progression. He'll spend two months in Lehigh Valley and then off to the show. PhillyboyinNYC .... The NYC factor got you. Don't be so angry.

These are the stats on Ibanez over the last 2 weeks, when he "started hitting": .263, grounded into 3 DP's, 7 K's, 2HR. He's hit .211 with 13 K's against LH pitching this year. He hit .263 in May, dropped to .243 in June. His BA after the 5th inning is well under .200 - murderous. Most people posting here have not seen Brown play. He's an awesome player. While it makes sense to let him hit some AAA pitching, he needs to be brought up sooner rather than later. And while it's true that Ibanez has a history of streaky hitting, the current streak of poor hitting has been going on for a YEAR. Interesting dilemma, and similar to the Thome-Howard and Bell-Utley issue @ 5 years ago. The Phillies lost the division title by playing Thome and Bell too long. Misplaced money and loyalty.

I believe Brown will do well. Perhaps not at first but, I think he will be in the Majors before the end of the year even if just for a few at-bats. BTW, the last time the Phils scored 12 runs it was the beginning of that terrible slump. I know. I know. I should keep my big mouth shut!! But, that's what happens when you have been a Phillies fan as long as I have

A lot of you people obviously dont follow the Phils very closely out side of the final score or know a thing about baseball. Raul is coming along, and yes 38 year oldfielders coming back from a sports hernia do "just start hitting the ball." Yeah, its taken him a while, btu he'll get there...its baseball, every year great hitters slump...look at guys like Texeira, he never hits until about the end of May...it takes awhile to get your swing where you want it...this isnt little league, these are major league pitchers guys are facing. Wait on brown unless you are out of contention, then lets bring him up to get his feet wet. This team is 2.5 games out first and just went through one of the toughest times I have seen then go through...they went to back to back WS with this team...relax, its not even the all star break yet. When the Phils start firing on all cylinders you idiots will be like "Ohhh this team, I knew it, so much heart, I bleed red, lets get another parade!" Idiots

Ibanez in the last 10 games is hitting ONLY .235. Stop defending this guy. Ibanez was putting up numbers last year that he NEVER PRODUCED IN HIS ENTIRE CAREER till he got hurt, which can happen to players who take drugs and, or, are old...He is near the end of his career yet puts up numbers that have him on pace for career highs in average, homeruns, rbi's..etc??? and it only stops when he gets hurt? that is very suspicious. and if he is streaky, then why is he still stuggling this year? He is 38 and hopefully he still has something left, but since the All-star break last season, the hot "steak" is nowhere to be found.... The Phillies need to get Brown ready. His time may be sooner than latter. esp. since the phillis have no bench. Gload batting .208? Thats almost as bad as Dobbs. And Francisco still has no homeruns and batting .221.

Phillyboyinnyc.... do you seriously think that is going to send a message? Well you are right, it will send a message that the phils don't want him and will open the door for boston and either ny to pay him even more money. Get a clue

Good move for Domo ----a year or two at AAA and then we will be able to squeeze him into a platoon role in the bigs.

i love the posters who defend ibanez. do any of you really think that signing a 36 year old to a 3 year contract at 12 million per was a good idea at the time. even after his great first half last year, anyone who watches this game knows damn well that he is not worth the price. i'm starting to think that rubes has several philly.com accounts and is the one posting these ibanez is a great player(relly142) posts. we are stuck with him, the phillies wont eat his salary, way more than jenkins and eatons. and they will never find another GM to take his contract.

phillyboyinNYC there's no way you took business as a major. Ticket sales are a small part of the books. And as already said they are not a public company so no private company is going to show anyone their books. If the phil's get their own network that's when real money will come in. The whole being cheap thing is just people who have no business sense and spend money wildley in their own lives.
