Brown called up as Victorino goes to DL

POSTED: Wednesday, July 28, 2010, 1:43 PM

Domonic Brown is here.

The Phillies have called up their top prospect from triple-A Lehigh Valley when they placed centerfielder Shane Victorino on the 15-day disabled list with an abdominal strain on his left side.

After Tuesday's game, Victorino was optimistic the injury wouldn't require a trip to the disabled list. But an MRI this morning evidently showed the injury is serious enough.

Brown, 22, has hit .327 with 20 home runs and 68 RBIs in 93 games for triple and double A. He is the top-rated Phillies prospect. Scouts have been impressed with not only Brown's numbers, but also the way he's gone about his business as one of the most visible prospects in the entire minor leagues.

A National League scout told our Bob Brookover on Tuesday that Brown was more than ready to play in the majors.

Brown will wear No. 9 with the Phillies.

The biggest test for Brown will be facing lefthanded pitching in the majors. His first test will be Thursday when Arizona starts Joe Saunders.

The toosly lefthanded outfielder is batting .303 against lefthanded pitching this season with an .881 OPS. But only three of his 20 home runs have come off lefties.

Brown will likely start in rightfield tonight with Jayson Werth shifting to centerfield in Victorino's absense. A few weeks ago, Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr said Brown would only come up if he could play every day at the major-league level.

That opportunity has arrived.

Much more to come...

I wanted Brown up here more then anything, however not like this. Now we won't get anything for Werth, which is ok I guess. Maybe Ruben Still makes a deal to move Werth if Victorino is only going to need 1 stint on the DL? Then let BEN F play until he's ready? I dunno just a thought

Wait until the experts at CBP get to see Brown play the outfield. Saw him at least 50 times in the minors through last week. Bobby Abreu will now look like Willie Mays.

Smart move by Victorino, now all the injured newly weds of the last couple of years can focus on pleasing their honeys while rehabing, getting fat, happy, & carefree--without breaking up the team.

Just an ideal situation. Brown can come up and play every day, get exposed to major league pitching, but without the pressure of having to hold up for a whole season. And he won't have to be great to fill in for Victorino -- the Flyin Hawaaian's OBP is really awful this year for a top of the lineup guy.

When Vic comes off the DL, Brown most likely will head back to AAA. What are they going to do, release Gload or Francisco, their best LH and RH pinch hitters, and sit Raul, who finally is finding his stroke or Victorino, their best defensive player and best base stealing threat to accommodate him? Is he going to play everyday with Raul and Werth, which will mean that the LH heavy lineup will be more LH heavy or is he going to platoon with Francisco (bad idea)?

Cool! But what's "toosly?" Can't find a definition for it, nor one for "toos." Go Brown!

Why sit Ibanez? His line since the all-star break: .385 avg, .467 OBP, .513 SLG, .980 OPS....Even scarier - Ibanez over the last 7 days: .409 avg, .500 OBP, .636 SLG, 1.136 OPS. Shane? Well, without going through it all, let's just say that his OBP since the all-star game is .264 (which includes 1 walk)....ouch. Werth can cover CF just fine, I'd love to see an Ibanez/Werth/Brown outfield with Shane playing for the Astros.

He made "tool" an adverb. Sweet. Didn't Mantle get his start this way?

all I can say is, it's about time! It provides us an opportunity to see what he can do without shipping off werth right away and forcing him into a higher pressure situation. a win-win all around. If he plays well, I still think we need to go get another starting pitcher. We may be able to make the playoffs with what we have now, (but it'll be close), but I can say pretty confidently that without adding someone, there won't be a parade this year.
