Brown called up as Victorino goes to DL

POSTED: Wednesday, July 28, 2010, 1:43 PM

Domonic Brown is here.

The Phillies have called up their top prospect from triple-A Lehigh Valley when they placed centerfielder Shane Victorino on the 15-day disabled list with an abdominal strain on his left side.

After Tuesday's game, Victorino was optimistic the injury wouldn't require a trip to the disabled list. But an MRI this morning evidently showed the injury is serious enough.

Brown, 22, has hit .327 with 20 home runs and 68 RBIs in 93 games for triple and double A. He is the top-rated Phillies prospect. Scouts have been impressed with not only Brown's numbers, but also the way he's gone about his business as one of the most visible prospects in the entire minor leagues.

A National League scout told our Bob Brookover on Tuesday that Brown was more than ready to play in the majors.

Brown will wear No. 9 with the Phillies.

The biggest test for Brown will be facing lefthanded pitching in the majors. His first test will be Thursday when Arizona starts Joe Saunders.

The toosly lefthanded outfielder is batting .303 against lefthanded pitching this season with an .881 OPS. But only three of his 20 home runs have come off lefties.

Brown will likely start in rightfield tonight with Jayson Werth shifting to centerfield in Victorino's absense. A few weeks ago, Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr said Brown would only come up if he could play every day at the major-league level.

That opportunity has arrived.

Much more to come...

I got a chance to talk with him during spring training. Nice guy. He was recruited as a wide reciever at Univeristy of Miami.

Ibanez is starting to hit like he was in the first half of '09. Really no point in sitting him now. The occasional rest he is getting from not facing lefties is helping him tremendously as well as switching to a lighter bat. More likely than not Brown will be sent back down to AAA once Shane comes back, but will be back up for the Sept. call-ups.

One of the oldest truths in baseball, one that you've heard countless times from GM's around both leagues is that often the best deals are the ones you didn't make. So all of you Ruben-haters out there, aren't you glad that no deals were cut in the last week? Aren't you gald that Werth is still there? How happy are you that Polanco and Valdez are on this team - people that Ruben brought here? Here's a team that, because of injury, has played all 8 of its starting position players together 8 times in almost 100 games. They have lost 3 of their 5 starting pitchers to lons periods on the DL. Four of their relievers also have spent long stretches there. They have lost their All Star shortstop and second baseman for two months or more. They lost their catcher and third basemand and now their centerfielder to the DL. And after all of this they are right there in the middle of the pennant race. This is a remarkable team, folks. When the Mets went through similar problems last year they finished dead last and were never competitive. Get Utley and Victorino back and give Happ a few games to get his location consistent and watch out. This is the best team in baseball if everyone is healthy.

Brown will get his cup of coffee for two weeks, Victorino will be back playing center field, and then on September 1st they'll bring Brown back up. Once that happens, Uncle Cholly will play who's hot between the outfielders. If Brown plays extremly well, and the Phils can reach the play-offs again, maybe he gets put on the play-off roster. I'm hoping for the best here!

Domonic will hit better than Shane but who bats leadoff while Jimmy is still out? I think I'd bat Polly first followed by Dom second. There has to be some speed at the top of the lineup.

for all of you new to baseball there are such things as a 5 tool player: hit for average, hit for power, run, throw, and field. hence "toolsy"

Rick Wise Guy: excellent batting order suggestion.

"toosly" is a word made up by a first-year hack who thinks he's a columnist, who has such little command of the English language that he thinks anything can be made to fit what he wants to say. For so long, we have been spoiled by "real" writers such as Bill Lyon and Bill Conlin, and now we (in one of the largest cities) have to put up with this drivel. Journalistic trainees such as this should be learning how to write in outposts such as Podunk, Iowa, not Philadelphia!

Moyer and Shane getting injured may be the best thing to happen to this team this year.

Al Wilson I agree with everything you said but it would have been evern better if the trade was NOT made involving that Lee character!! This is an amazingly good team. Anyone going to the game tonight is strongly advised to save your ticket stubs for posterity.
