Brown still here; batting second

POSTED: Friday, July 29, 2011, 3:16 PM

Yes, everyone's least favorite baseball player ever is still here. And not only is Domonic Brown here, he is batting second for the Phillies as they open a three-game series against Pittsburgh.

Brown is the subject of rampant trade rumors from numerous media outlets, some of which may be true, and some of which may not be. It's important to remember this time of year that a well-planted smoke screen can be a team's best friend.

So for now, Brown is batting second for the fifth time in his career. He did it four times earlier this season. In 19 July games, Brown is hitting .303 with a .789 OPS.

This also could be the last hurrah for Wilson Valdez, who starts for the first time in two weeks. He could find himself out of a major-league job this weekend when Placido Polanco is activated from the disabled list.

It's Roy Halladay vs. Mini Roy Halladay (Charlie Morton).

1. Jimmy Rollins 6
2. Domonic Brown 9
3. Chase Utley 4
4. Ryan Howard 3
5. Shane Victorino 8
6. Raul Ibanez 7
7. Carlos Ruiz 2
8. Wilson Valdez 5
9. Roy Halladay 1

Sir: Every time I think that GQ was idiot for calling Philly the worst sports fans around, all I have to do is come to philly.com to realize they weren't far off, if a little off.
Insofar as AI was concerned, I never saw a player who played any harder, in games, of course, but NEVER in PRACTICE?
Yes, Dom Brown's start is relatively comparable with Chase Utley's start, and at a younger age when DB should have probably been allowed another Iron Pig year!
AND, his start is far and away better than one Michael Jack Schmidt's start was!
But, welcome to Philadelphia, the city of brotherly boo boo birding and PANIC! No relaxation or enjoyment, here!

The writer was a bit immature with that statement.....many fans who are willing to part with Dom Brown are willing because they fell Pence is a serious upgrade to what Brown brings now....not what he may or may not someday become..

While we argue if Brown is untouchable or not, why the Astros don't want him? He also is been offered to the White Sox for Quentin, according to reports. So, what's the problem? It could be that outside Philadelphia he is not as highly regarded as some of you think. I think he's talent is way overrated.

This will be a mistake the Phils will regret for a long time if they make this trade and Brown is included. Pence will be making next year in arbitration what Raul makes this year, plus you will have to go out and get a LF for more than 450k, which is what Brown will be making next year.

These people who want to throw Brown out of town haven't a clue how long it's been since the last Phillies outfield prospect that had any value.

As the sole surviving member of the WillieV fanclub, I am despondent, so much so that I will confine myself to muscatel until further notice.

Brown is everyone's least favorite player? Really? That's an exaggeration of the truth. Lots of knowledgeable Philly fans still like Brown. The ones who don't like Brown are the impatient morons who think the roster is unacceptable unless it has 25 Hall of Famers. Brown is 23 and was rushed to the majors a little because Victorino got hurt. Anyone who has already given up on the guy because he didn't hit .400 right out of the chute is clueless about baseball.

Brown is the five tool player. Unfortunately he doesn't have a tool belt.

The Phillies increase Pence's value each game where they score only 1 run (unearned at that). Another game like that tonight and the next thing you know, the Astros will be demanding that Worley be thrown into the deal as well.

I am more inclined each day to keep Brown so he may play left next year; he is a young developing kid who will have some mistakes; it looks like the Astros are trying to make up from some poor trades in previous years - could be too much to ask for Pence...
