CLEARWATER, Fla. — Domonic Brown was a late scratch with a stiff neck in the Phillies' split squad game at Port Charlotte, Fla., against Tampa Bay.

Brown already missed five games this spring with a sprained right thumb. He was scheduled to be the designated hitter for a second straight day because Charlie Manuel said he wants to see different players in left field.

The split squad offered the Phillies a look at both Scott Podsednik and Juan Pierre, who are battling for the fifth outfielder spot. Each started in left Thursday.

Brown is 6 for 20 (.300) with three extra-base hits and no strikeouts this spring. His defensive troubles have him ticketed to triple-A Lehigh Valley to begin the season.
