Boras talks Werth

POSTED: Monday, September 20, 2010, 3:47 PM

Read my earlier post on Werth-Boras here.

After Jayson Werth canvassed the agent community over the past month, he settled upon Scott Boras, one of the game's most powerful figures. Boras could land Werth a huge deal this off-season when he becomes a free agent, but the superagent thinks a common bond helped forge the two parties.

"I think we got along because we were both raised by farmers," Boras said by phone. "His stepfather and my father were both farmers. You go to work, get your job done, you do your thing and you keep your mouth shut."

Werth hired Boras late Sunday night. He called the agent to inform him of his decision hours after hitting a walk-off home run to beat the Washington Nationals.

"It was a real good day," Boras said.

Boras expects his client to command a significant deal on the market. The first positive about Werth's 2010 season that Boras mentioned was the fact he could play centerfield. Werth has started 18 games in center this season.

So will talks with the Phillies, who appear to be a significant long shot to re-sign Werth, begin before the season is over?

"Certainly," Boras said. "The Phillies are a very viable alternative."

Alternative?

"Whenever a player is playing well at a place, you have to look at those places closely because they're a good combination," Boras said. "It's good business for the Phillies. They've been running their business rather well. They're putting together a core, a dynasty."

Boras has had limited dealings with the Phillies since the J.D. Drew saga in 1997. He also represents current Phillies Ryan Madson and Domonic Brown -- coincidentally, the player who could replace Werth in the Phillies' lineup.

The agent said he has kept in contact with Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr.

"In the era of Ruben, we talk about a lot of free agents," Boras said. "We interact quite a bit. Ruben and I have a very good working relationship over the years."

not sure why there is a determination that Brown replaces Werth-a lefty bat for Werth's righty bat, I'm not so sure they go for that...

let Werth walk. It's all downhill from here for him. We're better off with Brown's bright future.

Brown is ready and his low salary frees up money elsewhere. Werth has been playing smarter and better lately, and we'll miss him. But Brown is ready, some youth is needed and maybe this gets us LHP help in the 'pen next year or a solid fourth outfielder/PH. To really make my day, the Phillies would trade Blanton in the offseason. A guy can dream, right?

If Werth was raised by a goat herder Boras would say he was too. Sports agents are very low forms of life.

Just hope he leaves the NL East. I'm sure Boras can get Werth some extra money doing Geico caveman commercials too.

If the Phils make it to the series, they'll have cash to make a hell of an offer to Werth. They get all kinds of crazy coin for TV revenue, ticket sales, concessions, merchandise etc. That alone will merit a competitive offer. Now I don't think the Phils will match a team that will overpay, but if they make it to the series they should be able to be in contention.

Keep Boras out of the sports pages, he belongs either in the business section or the funnies. Really. Why does the paper have to do Boras' job?

Boras is poison! People say he's a good agent because he gets his clients top dollar. But keep in mind what that brings to the client. He gets the big payday but that opens another can of worms. His new team's fans now see the big payday and expect big things. Werth goes into one of his famous month long slumps and the new fans let him hear it. The player gets upset, the fans put more pressure on and now the only person happy is Boros. He cashes his check and does whatever he wants, his client's performance is not his problem.Boros thrives only because he's smarter than the average athlete. Such a shame.

I'm very disappointed to see Werth signed with that guy. Boras is
a cancer in baseball. He does get money for his players but i hate
the guy's guts. What a shame baseball has to deal with this guy.
Jayson knows after signing with Boras his days are number with the
Phils. Phils will not pay what Boras will be asking for. The Phils
will just let Jayson walk and get a draft pick from whoever signs
him. The Phils gave Jayson a chance when he was down and out and gave
him a chance to be a star but i guess loyalty doesn't exist in sports
anymore. Wherever you go Jayson i hope you stink not because of you
but because of the idiot agent you signed with.

Boras is baseball's best agent and a good move for Werth. Hopefully they can figure out a way to work it so he stays, but honestly, I won't miss his erratic play- particularly the half dozen times he got caught napping on base this year, or the time he did it in game 6 of the WS.

Boras has most likely told Werth that Brown will be starting next year, so just let the Phillies go...He is lieing about the Phillies being even an alternative...But ya can't blame Werth...he needs to be a starter...and we won't have room

Werth has done a fantastic job with the phillies. Great player, great attitude, I hope he gets his payday, I wish him best of luck(as long as he's not playing against the phils).

Werth is gone...some stupid team will over pay him like the Giants overpaid for Rowand after the 07 season. Shame we didn't get a chance to see Brown play more this summer but I have a feeling he will be alright come 2011.
    tralala
